Die UNSW Sydney kann ihre Wurzeln bis zum 1843 gegründeten Sydney Mechanics Institute zurückverfolgen und wurde 1949 zur heutigen Universität. Sie gehört zu den acht besten Universitäten Australiens, der so genannten Group of Eight (G8), und gilt als die führende Universität Australiens in Hinsicht auf ihre Internationalität.
Die Mitglieder der Group of Eight legen dabei hohen Wert auf eine qualitativ hochwertige Lehre und Forschung. Zwischen den Mitgliedern dieser Gruppe bestehen unter anderem Netzwerke zum Wissensaustausch und Austausch der Lehrkräfte und Studenten. Hiervon profitiert auch die UNSW Sydney, die zahlreiche gute Verbindungen zu den anderen Universitäten der Group of Eight sowie den Top-Universitäten in Asien, Nordamerika, Westeuropa und dem britischen Königreich hat.
Im 2011 QS World University Rankings hat es die UNSW Sydney an die 46. Stelle aller Universitäten weltweit geschafft, was besonders bemerkenswert ist, denn unter den besten 50 Hochschulen sind insgesamt nur wenige australische Universitäten gelistet. Der 2012 Good Universities Guide bewertet sie mit der Bestnote von fünf Sternen in sieben verschiedenen Kategorien, darunter zum Beispiel „Student-Staff Ratio“, „Staff Qualifications“ oder „Cultural Diversity“.
Internationale Studenten haben die Möglichkeit, in verschiedenen Studienprogrammen an der UNSW Sydney zu studieren wie Auslandssemester und Sprachkurse. Aber auch Bachelor– und Masterabschlüsse und andere Programme können absolviert werden.
Studienjahr
Das Studienjahr an der UNSW Sydney ist in drei Trimester unterteilt.
- Trimester 1, 2026: 16. Februar 2026 – 14. Mai 2026
- Trimester 2, 2026: 27. Juli 2026 – 21. November 2026
- Trimester 3, 2026: 14. September 2026 – 18. Dezember 2026
Der Hauptstandort der UNSW Sydney befindet sich sieben Kilometer vom Stadtzentrum Sydneys entfernt im Vorort Kensington. Zu den Stränden ist es nicht weit; so liegt der nächste Strand, der Cogee Bay, nur drei Kilometer entfernt, und auch der weltbekannte Bondi Beach ist innerhalb von zehn Minuten leicht zu erreichen.
Das Gelände ist in den Upper Campus und Lower Campus unterteilt. Sie unterscheiden sich durch eine Höhendifferenz zwischen dem Quadrangle und dem Scientia-Gebäude.
Neben dem Campus in Kensington gibt es weitere kleinere Standorte der UNSW Sydney, unter anderem in Paddington, einem weiteren Vorort Sydneys. Hier ist das College of Fine Arts beheimatet.
Schließlich gibt es noch die UNSW at ADFA (Australian Defence Force Academy) in Canberra. Weitere kleine Ableger der Universität existieren in Randwick, Coogee, Botany, Dee Why, Cowan, Manly Vale, Fowlers Gap und Bankstown Airport.
Internationale Studenten der UNSW Sydney können entweder auf dem Campus oder außerhalb des Geländes eine Unterkunft finden.

Die eigentliche Stadt Sydney in Australien hat ohne die umliegenden Gebiete etwa 170 000 Einwohner, und die Innenstadt wird im Norden vom Hafen und von Circular Quay, im Osten von der Macquarie Street, im Westen vom Western Distributor und im Süden von der Liverpool Street begrenzt.
Sie ist das Industrie-, Handels- und Finanzzentrum Australiens und ein wichtiger Anziehungspunkt für Touristen. Als Wahrzeichen gelten das muschelförmige Opernhaus, das laut dem Erbauer dem Entfalten einer Orange nachempfunden sein soll, und die bekannte Hafenbrücke, neben der sich direkt die riesigen Royal Botanic Gardens befinden.
Man kann die Innenstadt leicht zu Fuß erschließen, und neben der Hafengegend ist vor allem die Altstadt „The Rocks“ mit ihren Lagerhäusern an der Sydney Cove besonders sehenswert. Das höchste Gebäude ist der 305 Meter hohe Sydney Tower, der eine Aussichtsplattform hat und eine Rundumsicht über den Hafen bietet. Als Unterhaltungszentrum gilt das Gebiet um Darling Harbour, das bequem mit der Monorail befahren werden kann; dort befinden sich neben Restaurants ein Sega-World-Park, das Panasonic IMAX Theatre, Veranstaltungsstätten mit wechselndem Programm, der Chinesische Garten, das Schifffahrtsmuseum und das Sydney Aquarium, ein Meeresmuseum mit glasüberdachten Tunneln.
Sydney liegt in der subtropischen Klimazone, aber aufgrund der Nähe zur Küste ist es nicht allzu heiß. Die Jahresdurchschnittstemperatur liegt bei 17,4 °C, im Winter fällt die Temperatur fast nie unter 5 °C. Die niedrigste jemals gemessene Temperatur waren 2,1 °C. Dieses Wetter macht die Strände, vor allem den bekannten Bondi Beach, besonders attraktiv für Surfer und Touristen.
Studienprogramme
Aufbaustudiengänge kann man an der UNSW Sydney in Form von Graduate Certificates oder Graduate Diplomas absolvieren. Die Certificates dauern in der Regel sechs Monate, die Diplomas etwas länger.
Diese Abschlüsse Graduate Certificate und Graduate Diploma werden allerdings in Deutschland nicht als akademische Abschlüsse anerkannt, sondern können zu Weiterbildungszwecken oder zur Anrechnung von Credits genutzt werden.
Zulassungsvoraussetzungen & Bewerbungsprozess
Normalerweise benötigt man für die Teilnahme an einem Aufbaustudiengang einen ersten akademischen Abschluss wie den Bachelor. Je nach Fachrichtung können noch weitere Voraussetzungen hinzukommen.
Außerdem müssen internationale Studenten anhand einer Mindestpunktzahl in einem standardisierten Sprachtest wie dem IELTS einen Nachweis über ausreichende Englischkenntnisse erbringen. Die Werte können variieren; nur der niedrigste Wert wird unten genannt.

Die UNSW Sydney bietet internationalen Studenten die Möglichkeit, im Rahmen des Study Abroad Programs für ein oder zwei Semester an der Universität zu studieren. Hierbei besteht die Möglichkeit der semester- und fachbereichsübergreifenden Kursauswahl aus allen Kursen der an der UNSW Sydney angebotenen Bachelor- und auch Masterstudiengänge.
Während der Zeit im Study Abroad Program ist man an der Universität als Vollzeitstudent eingeschrieben und kann aus unzähligen Studienprogrammen auswählen. Es bestehen verschiedene Möglichkeiten, entweder nur Kurse aus dem Bachelorbereich, nur Kurse aus dem Masterbereich oder eine Kombination aus Kursen beider Bereiche zu belegen.
Darüber hinaus haben Teilnehmer die Möglichkeit, einen ihrer Kurse durch ein Praktikum zu ersetzen. In diesem Fall arbeiten sie 2 Tage pro Woche im Praktikumsbetrieb und erlangen so einen Einblick in die australische Berufswelt. Für mehr Informationen zu dieser Option sprecht uns einfach an!
Zulassungsvoraussetzungen & Bewerbungsprozess
Bewerber für das Study Abroad Program der UNSW Sydney müssen mindestens zwei Semester im Heimatland studiert haben. Zudem sind ausreichend gute Englischkenntnisse notwendig, die durch das Erreichen einer Mindestpunktzahl bei einem standardisierten Englischtest wie dem TOEFL oder dem IELTS nachgewiesen werden müssen.

Finanzierungsmöglichkeiten
Studenten können unter anderem Auslands-BAföG beantragen, um ein Auslandssemester an der UNSW Sydney zu finanzieren. Das umfasst neben einem Zuschuss zu den Studiengebühren in Höhe von bis zu EUR 5.600 auch finanzielle Unterstützung bei den Lebenshaltungs-, Reise- und Krankenversicherungskosten, sofern ein individueller Förderungsanspruch bestehen sollte.

Internationale Studenten können an der UNSW Sydney unter vielen verschiedenen Bachelorstudiengängen aus allen möglichen Fachrichtungen wählen.
Normale Bachelorabschlüsse dauern meistens drei, manchmal auch vier Jahre; für einen Bachelor with Honours benötigt man immer vier Jahre. Außerdem gibt es noch doppelte Bachelorstudiengänge, die zwischen vier und sieben Jahren dauern. Je nach Studiengang bekommt man am Ende entweder einen Doppelabschluss oder zwei einzelne Bachelorabschlüsse.
Zulassungsvoraussetzungen & Bewerbungsprozess
Für die Teilnahme an einem Bachelorstudiengang wird üblicherweise das Abitur vorausgesetzt.
Darüber hinaus müssen internationale Studenten anhand einer Mindestpunktzahl in einem standardisierten Sprachtest wie dem IELTS oder TOEFL einen Nachweis über ausreichende Englischkenntnisse erbringen.

An der UNSW Sydney wird zwischen zwei Arten der Promotion unterschieden, der kursbasierten (Coursework) und der forschungsbasierten (Research).
Der drei Jahre dauernde Doctor of Law ist kursbasiert, alle anderen sind theoretischer ausgelegt und basieren auf drei bis vier Jahren Forschungsarbeit unter Aufsicht eines Akademikers. Am Ende muss eine Thesis verfasst werden. Die Abschlüsse heißen entweder Doctor of Philosophy in vielen verschiedenen Themengebieten oder Doctor of Medicine.
Zulassungsvoraussetzungen & Bewerbungsprozess
Für den kursbasierten Doctor of Law muss man den Bachelorabschluss besitzen. Bei den forschungsbasierten Promotionsstudiengängen muss es allerdings schon ein Bachelor mit Honours oder ein Masterabschluss sein.
Außerdem müssen internationale Studenten anhand einer Mindestpunktzahl in einem standardisierten Sprachtest wie dem IELTS einen Nachweis über ausreichende Englischkenntnisse erbringen. Die Werte können variieren; nur der niedrigste Wert wird unten genannt.
