Beschreibung der University of California Irvine Die 1965 gegründete UCI ist eine der am schnellsten wachsenden Universitäten innerhalb des prestigeträchtigen “University of California”-Verbunds mit einem exzellenten Ruf als Forschungseinrichtung. Die Universität zeichnet sich zudem durch ihre sehr gute Lehre aus, die in den Studenten Leidenschaft und Begeisterung für ihr Fach wecken und ihnen die Fähigkeiten vermitteln soll, die sie brauchen, um als “Global Citizens” Führungsrollen in der Gesellschaft zu übernehmen. Der US News & World Report führt die UCI in seinem “America´s Best Colleges Guide 2008” auf dem 44. Platz aller Universitäten in den USA mit Bachelor-, Master- und Promotionsstudiengängen. Unter den staatlichen Universitäten liegt sie sogar auf dem 13. Platz. Drei derzeit an der UCI ansässige Forscher haben zudem den Nobelpreis in ihrem jeweiligen Fachgebiet erhalten.

Die UCI liegt am Stadtrand von Irvine unweit der Grenze zur Stadt Newport Beach mit ihren beliebten Stränden. Der Campus ist architektonisch ansprechend gestaltet und sehr großzügig angelegt. In seinem Zentrum liegt der Aldrich Park, ein knapp acht Hektar großer botanischer Garten mit mehr als 11.000 Bäumen und Sträuchern. Um den Aldrich Park herum führt ein kreisförmiger Fußweg, von dem die Wege zu den einzelnen Fachbereiche und Fakultäten abgehen und der es den Studenten leicht macht, schnell von einem Ort zum anderen zu kommen. Auch für eine aktive Freizeitgestaltung wird an der UCI gesorgt: Das Anteater Recreation Center bietet auf rund 9.000m² neben einem modernen Fitnesscenter weitere Sporthallen und -plätze, ein Schwimmbad und eine Kletterwand. Im University Center, das über eine Brücke mit dem Campus verbunden ist, verbringen viele Studenten die freie Zeit zwischen ihren Kursen, zum Beispiel um in einem der zahlreichen dort gelegenen Restaurants zu essen.
Irvine ist eine Universitätsstadt im kalifornischen Orange County in den USA und hat etwa 180 000 Einwohner. Sie wurde in den frühen 1960er Jahren von einem privaten Unternehmen, der Irvine Company, geplant und gebaut. 1971 erhielt der Ort die Stadtrechte. Er liegt nur 60 Kilometer südöstlich von Los Angeles und weniger als 10 Kilometer vom Pazifik entfernt. Das Klima ist mit Durchschnittstemperaturen von 21,7 °C im August und 13,3 °C im Januar sehr angenehm und lädt zum Wassersport ein. Seit Mitte der neunziger Jahre zieht es vor allem immer mehr IT- und Hightech-Unternehmen nach Irvine, denn sie ist nicht nur die sicherste Stadt des Landes, sondern auch eine der wirtschaftsfreundlichsten. Man kann sich in einem der 18 Community Parks oder der 35 Neighborhood Parks entspannen, eine der vielen Sporteinrichtungen nutzen oder das 1980 gegründete Irvine Fine Arts Center besuchen.

 Summer Sessions

Beschreibung: An der UC Irvine werden während des Sommers die so genannten "Summer Sessions" angeboten.
Die Summer Sessions sind reguläre Universitätskurse, die sowohl für amerikanische als auch für internationale Studenten angeboten werden und den Lehrstoff der Kurse des Semesters in einem sechswöchigen kompakten Kurs zusammenfassen. So werden Kurse aus fast allen Fachbereichen angeboten, die auch während des Semesters stattfinden.
Besonders bekannt und renommiert ist die UCI für ihre sehr gute Forschung und Lehre im Bereich der Biological Sciences. Dementsprechend viele interessante Kurse gibt es im Sommer daher in diesem Fachbereich, doch auch das Angebot an Kursen in Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Cognitive Sciences, Management & Economics, Social Sciences und Studio Art ist in Irvine beträchtlich. Voraussetzungen: Die Summer Sessions sind im prinzipiell für alle Studenten frei zugänglich und nicht an die strengen Bewerbungskriterien gebunden, die für andere reguläre Studienprogramme der UC Irvine sonst gelten. So können neben Studenten und Berufstätigen auch bereits Abiturienten an den Summer Sessions teilnehmen.
Natürlich müssen auch hier ausreichend gute Englischkenntnisse vorhanden sein. Diese können zum einen durch einen standardisierten Englischtest wie den TOEFL oder IELTS nachgewiesen werden. Aufgrund einer Vereinbarung mit der UC Irvine darf College-Contact.com jedoch als International Registration Center die Englischkenntnisse der deutschen Bewerber eigenständig prüfen und darf die Art des Nachweises frei wählen. College-Contact.com akzeptiert außer dem TOEFL oder IELTS auch den Nachweis über gute oder sehr gute Englischnoten während der Oberstufe oder im Studium, den Nachweis über einen längeren (Sprach-) Aufenthalt im englischsprachigen Ausland oder den Nachweis über andere absolvierte Englischkurse.
