Beschreibung der University of California Santa Barbara Die UCSB wurde 1905 zunächst als Santa Barbara City College gegründet, schloss sich 1944 dem „University of California“-Verbund an und erhielt 1958 schließlich ihren heutigen Namen. Sie ist bekannt sowohl für ihre exzellenten Forschungsleistungen als auch für ihre qualitativ hochwertige Lehre, in deren Rahmen Fähigkeiten wie Kreativität, eigenständiges Denken und kritisches Hinterfragen besonders gefördert werden sollen. Im „America´s Best Colleges Guide 2008“ des US News & World Report belegt die UCSB unter allen Forschungsuniversitäten in den USA, die Bachelor- und Masterstudiengänge sowie Doktorgrade anbieten, den 44. Platz. Unter den staatlichen Universitäten liegt sie sogar auf Platz 15. Fünf Professoren der UCSB haben in den letzten sieben Jahren überdies einen Nobelpreis in ihrem jeweiligen Fachgebiet erlangen können.

Die Lage der UCSB ist geradezu spektakulär: Ihr rund 400 Hektar großer Campus liegt etwa 30 Minuten außerhalb von Downtown Santa Barbara direkt am Pazifischen Ozean und ist an drei Seiten von Wasser umgeben. Die Universität besitzt daher sogar einen eigenen Strand und eine eigene Lagune. Der Campus selbst ist sehr grün, weitläufig angelegt und von etlichen Radwegen durchzogen. Mitten auf dem Campus befindet sich der gut 50 Meter hohe Storke Tower, von dessen Aussichtsplattform aus man den ganzen Campus überblicken kann. Da viele Studenten direkt auf dem Campus oder in der angrenzenden Gemeinde Isla Vista leben, gibt es an der UCSB ein sehr aktives Campusleben. Das University Center ist ein beliebter Treffpunkt. Hier gibt es einen Buchladen, Restaurants einen Konzertsaal und das „Multicultural Center“, in dem regelmäßig Vorträge, Filmabende, Lesungen und andere kulturelle Veranstaltungen stattfinden.
Santa Barbara wird auch als “Amerikanische Riviera” bezeichnet, denn neben ihrem mediterranen Klima bietet die zwischen den Ynez Mountains und dem Pazifik gelegene Stadt auch einen hohen Lebensstandard. Nicht zuletzt durch dieses warme Klima ist Santa Barbara zu einem der besten Weinanbaugebiete aufgestiegen. Entlang der State Street in Richtung Downtown gibt es Gelegenheit zum Shoppen, aber man kann sich auch kulturell beschäftigen und Theater, Konzerte und Museen besuchen. Eine andere Art der Freizeitgestaltung bieten Nachtclubs, Restaurants oder Festivals; darüber hinaus lassen sich an den weiten Sandstränden und im Pazifik alle möglichen Arten von (Wasser-) Sport betreiben. Es gibt in der Stadt keine hoch gebauten Häuser, sondern lediglich elegante kleine Hotels und andere Gebäude, und fast jede Straße ist umrahmt von Palmen und blühenden Büschen. Sehenswert ist außerdem El Presidio de Santa Barbara, ein alter mexikanisch-spanischer Stadtteil rund um die Festung Fernald Mansion. Jeden Sonntag findet außerdem die Arts and Crafts Show statt, bei der Künstler und Handwerker entlang des Cabrillo Boulevard ihre Fähigkeiten unter Beweis stellen.

Beschreibung: An der UC Santa Barbara werden während des Sommers die so genannten "Summer Sessions" angeboten.
Die Summer Sessions sind reguläre Universitätskurse, die sowohl für amerikanische als auch für internationale Studenten angeboten werden, und den Lehrstoff der Kurse des Semesters in einem sechswöchigen kompakten Kurs zusammenfassen. Voraussetzungen: Bewerber für die Summer Sessions an der UCSB müssen das Abitur oder Fachabitur besitzen und ausreichend gute Englischkenntnisse nachweisen.
Dies geschieht in der Regel durch einen standardisierten Englischtest wie den TOEFL oder IELTS. Unterkünfte der University of California Santa Barbara Studentenwohnheim
 In den Wohnheimen gibt es einige Einzelzimmer, aber in der Regel werden die Studenten in Doppelzimmern untergebracht und teilen sich die Bäder. Die Zimmer sind mit Bett, Schreibtisch, Stuhl, Kommode, Kleiderschrank, Bücherregal, Papierkorb und Vorhängen ausgestattet, und Verpflegung in Form eines Meal Plans ist in der Miete von enthalten. Diese beläuft sich im günstigsten Fall auf US$ 10,351.27 pro Person für ein akademisches Jahr.
Die Wohnheimunterkünfte auf dem Universitätsgelände stehen für internationale Gaststudenten nur während der Summer Sessions zur Verfügung.

Apartments auf dem Campus
 Die Universität besitzt einige Apartments außerhalb des Campus´, in denen die Schlafzimmer Teppichboden haben und mit Doppelbett, Schrank, Kommode, Schreibtisch und Stuhl für jeden möbliert sind. Die Küchen haben Schränke, Spüle, Herd und Kühlschrank. In den Wohnbereichen befinden sich ein Sofa, Sessel, Couchtisch, Lampen, Esstisch und Stühle, und die Bäder sind mit Waschbecken, Dusche, Toilette und Apothekerschrank ausgestattet. Die Miete beträgt US$ 445 pro Monat und Person.
Die Apartments auf dem Universitätsgelände stehen für internationale Gaststudenten nur während der Summer Sessions zur Verfügung.

Private Apartments / Hotels
 Private Unterkünfte sind in Santa Barbara nicht ganz leicht zu finden, aber mit etwas Glück und Unterstützung der Universität findet man sicher ein Zimmer in einer Wohngemeinschaft oder ein eigenes Apartment. Natürlich kann es sein, dass diese Art der Unterbringung etwas teurer ist als die Unterkunft in einer Gastfamilie. Auch sollte man sich über bestimmte versteckte Kosten, wie Kautionen, zusätzliche Stromkosten oder ähnliches informieren und sich mit den Mietvereinbarungen gut vertraut machen.
Während die UCSB selbst keine WG-Zimmer oder Apartments vermittelt, so stellt sie doch Informationen zur Wohnungssuche zur Verfügung.

Gastfamilien
 Die Unterkunft in einer Gastfamilie ist ideal für diejenigen, die das Leben in einer amerikanischen Familie hautnah erleben möchten und konstant Englisch sprechen wollen. Die Gastfamilien sind in der Regel sehr interessiert daran, ihre Studenten so gut wie möglich zu unterstützen und tun viel für deren Wohlbefinden. Der Gast wird im Grunde als Teil der Familie aufgenommen, hat sein eigenes Zimmer und isst gemeinsam mit der Gastfamilie.
Wer sich überlegt, während des Gastsemesters bei einer amerikanischen Familie zu wohnen, sollte sich jedoch natürlich über gewisse Regeln des Zusammenlebens im Klaren sein.
