Beschreibung Newcastle University Die Newcastle University ist eine moderne staatliche Universität mit einer langen Tradition, die bis ins 19. Jahrhundert zurückgeht, als eine School of Medicine and Surgery gegründet wurde, aus der nach einer langen Entwicklung die heutige Universität hervorging. Sie gehört seit langer Zeit zu den besten 20 Universitäten in Großbritannien: Das einflussreiche Magazin "Research Fortnight" hat sie nach einer Auswertung des 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) für ihre Forschung auf den 17. Platz von 162 bewerteten Universitäten und Colleges gewählt, und bei einer Umfrage zur Studentenzufriedenheit der "Times Higher Education" vom Januar 2009 bekam sie sogar den 16. Platz.
Da sich die Newcastle University der akademischen Exzellenz verschrieben hat, besteht ihr Ziel darin, eine führende Rolle in der wirtschaftlichen, sozialen und kulturellen Entwicklung Nordenglands zu spielen. Deshalb sind sowohl Forschung als auch Lehre auf einem besonders hohen Niveau angesiedelt.

Die Newcastle University befindet sich auf einem Campus mit einer Größe von gut 20 Hektar inmitten der Stadt Newcastle upon Tyne, weshalb interessante Orte innerhalb der Stadt leicht zugänglich sind. Andere große Städte wie York, Edinburgh oder Manchester sind innerhalb relativ kurzer Zeit mit Bus oder Bahn zu erreichen.
Der Campus selbst soll in den nächsten Jahren mit finanziellen Mitteln in dreistelliger Millionenhöhe ausgebaut und verschönert werden. Aber bereits jetzt zählt er zu den attraktivsten des Landes und beherbergt unter anderem zum Beispiel Computerräume, Gärten, Parks, kulturelle Einrichtungen, Sporteinrichtungen, Labore, Bibliotheken, medizinische Einrichtungen und vieles mehr.
Newcastle, das eigentlich eine Abkürzung für Newcastle upon Tyne ist, weil es am Fluss Tyne liegt, ist eine Stadt mit über 270 000 Einwohnern im Nordosten Englands. Der Ursprung der Stadt liegt bei einer im Jahr 1080 errichteten Burg; später wurde sie zu einem der wichtigsten Wollhandelsplätze des Landes und dann zu einem Kohleabbaugebiet. Heute gilt die Stadt als wichtiges wirtschaftliches und kulturelles Zentrum und hat besonders in Bezug auf ihr Nachtleben einen guten Ruf erlangt.
Durch den Golfstrom ist das Klima in Newcastle etwas milder als in ähnlich gelegenen Städten, und wegen der Nähe zu den North Pennines regnet es relativ selten. Die Stadt weist zum Teil noch mittelalterliche Züge auf, die streckenweise nur zu Fuß erkundet werden können. Ansonsten ist das kürzlich restaurierte Zentrum, nach seinem Erbauer "Grainger Town" genannt, in neoklassizistischem Stil gehalten und stammt aus dem 19. Jahrhundert. Viele Parks und Grünflachen sind ebenfalls Teil des Stadtbildes. Im April 2007 wurde Newcastle sogar im Daily Telegraph von den Lesern zur "Best City in the North" gewählt und konnte somit einige andere große Städte wie Liverpool oder Manchester hinter sich lassen.
Am Tyne River, auf dessen anderer Seite die Stadt Gateshead liegt, findet besonders viel öffentliches Leben statt, denn hier gibt es seit einiger Zeit viele Bürogebäude, Plätze, Bars und Restaurants. Gemeinsam mit Gateshead bildet Newcastle daher mit dieser Quayside und ihren verbindenden Brücken wie der Tyne Bridge über den Tyne River das kulturelle Zentrum Nordostenglands. Zum Einkaufen steht das Eldon Square Shopping Centre zur Verfügung, das das größte Einkaufszentrum der Stadt ist, aber auch andere Geschäfte sind zahlreich vertreten, beispielsweise an der Northumberland Street in der Innenstadt.
Wie bereits erwähnt, ist Newcastle berühmt-berüchtigt für sein Nachtleben. Vor allem Junggesellinnen- und Junggesellenabschiede ("Stag and Hen Parties") finden hier häufig statt. Newcastle war 2007 bei den BBC News unter den besten zehn Locations in Bezug auf das Nachtleben, und "The Rough Guide to Britain" hat es sogar als die Touristenattraktion Nummer eins in Großbritannien bezeichnet. Aber auch kulturelle Sehenswürdigkeiten kommen nicht zu kurz; so gibt es unter anderem das altehrwürdige Theatre Royal an der Grey Street, das über 25 Jahre lang die Royal Shakespeare Company und auch die West End Musicals beherbergt hat. Auch Festivals und Jahrmärkte finden das ganze Jahr über statt, genau wie Musik- und Kunstveranstaltungen. Kulturbegeisterte können auch eine der zahlreichen Galerien oder eines der Museen besuchen.

 Aufbaustudium

Beschreibung: An der Newcastle University haben die Studenten die Möglichkeit, einen Aufbaustudiengang im Postgraduate-Bereich zu absolvieren. Diese Studiengänge schließen mit einem Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma oder Graduate Diploma ab.
Sie werden in allen möglichen Bereichen angeboten, darunter zum Beispiel Accounting and Finance, Biological Sciences, Dental Sciences, Geochemistry, Marine Sciences, Engineering, Music und viele andere. In der Regel werden sie dafür genutzt, sich auf einen Bereich zu spezialisieren oder vorhandenes Wissen zu erweitern.
Graduate Diplomas haben eine Dauer von neun bis zwölf Monaten, Postgraduate Certificates von sechs bis zwölf Monaten und Postgraduate Diplomas von sieben bis zwölf Monaten. Voraussetzungen: Die akademischen Voraussetzungen variieren je nach Studiengang. Generell gilt aber, dass man für ein Studium im Postgraduate-Bereich bereits einen ersten akademischen Abschluss vorweisen muss.

Beschreibung: Nach seinem Masterabschluss kann man sich an der Newcastle University in die Forschung begeben und auf diese Weise einen Doktortitel erlangen. Dazu gehört nicht nur fachliches Wissen in seinem Bereich, sondern man erlernt auch die neuesten Forschungstechniken.

Beschreibung: Einen Masterabschluss kann man sowohl durch Coursework (regulären Unterricht) als auch durch Research (Forschungsarbeit) erlangen. Unterkünfte Newcastle University Studentenwohnheim
 Internationale Studenten, die für mindestens ein Jahr an der Newcastle University studieren wollen, haben einen Platz in einem der zahlreichen Wohnheime sicher, sofern sie gewisse Voraussetzungen wie zum Beispiel die Einhaltung der Bewerbungsfristen erfüllen. Die meisten Wohngelegenheiten befinden sich in höchstens zehn Gehminuten Entfernung zur Universität.
Die Studenten können sich entweder selbst verpflegen oder die Mahlzeiten mitbuchen. Viele Unterkünfte haben außerdem Fernseher, Internetzugang, Telefonanschluss, Waschmaschinen und vieles mehr. Man kann in einem Einzel- oder einem Doppelzimmer leben und hat entweder ein eigenes Bad oder teilt sich eines mit mehreren anderen Studenten. Auch die Küchen werden gemeinschaftlich genutzt. Die Mietverträge haben eine Laufzeit von 38 bis 49 Wochen, je nach Semesterdauer.

 Viele Studenten bevorzugen eine private Unterkunft. Allerdings ist es meistens etwas schwieriger, eine Wohngelegenheit zu finden, wenn man noch nicht vor Ort ist.
