Die University of Sheffield erhielt vor mehr als 100 Jahren durch die Verleihung der Royal Charter durch das Königshaus 1905 ihren Universitätsstatus. Sie zählt damit zu den weltweit angesehenen Red Brick Universities in Großbritannien und gehört der berühmten Russell Group an. Die Sheffield University versteht sich als bürgernah und vielfältig – ein Kredo, das in allen Bereich der Universität spürbar ist. 

Auch deshalb ist die University of Sheffield eine beliebte Wahl für internationale aber auch einheimische Studenten. In Umfragen wie der Times Higher Education Student Experience Survery verleihen Studenten der Universität regelmäßig Bestnoten, wenn es um das Campusleben, die Serviceangebote, die Lehre oder die Unterkünfte geht.  

Die Universität besticht zudem durch ihre modernen und historischen Campusstandorte, die mit der Stadt Sheffield und ihren vielen Cafés, Shops und Restaurants harmonisch verschmelzen. Internationalen Studenten steht ein innovatives Studienangebot an mehr als fünf Fakultäten zur Verfügung. 

Unter den internationalen Forschungsuniversitäten belegt die University of Sheffield im QS World Ranking Platz 84 und im Times Higher Education World University Ranking Platz 104. Damit zählt sie zu den besten Universitäten Europas und den besten 10 Prozent der Universitäten in Großbritannien.

Zum Ausgleich vom Lernalltag stehen internationalen Studenten an der Sheffield University und in der Stadt Bars, Clubs und Shops zur Verfügung. Die Students‘ Union, die schon mehrmals zur besten Students‘ Union in Großbritannien gewählt wurde, verwaltet zahlreiche Clubs, Societies, Sportangebote und ein Uni-Kino. Im Sommer findet zum Abschluss des Semesters ein Kirmes mit Konzerten lokaler Bands auf dem Unigelände statt.

Campus

Obwohl die University of Sheffield keine klassische Campusuniversität ist, befinden sich die meisten Unigebäude zentral nordwestlich des Stadtzentrums in Western Bank und St. George’s. Vom traditionellen Herzen des Campus, dem malerischen Firth Court am Western Bank, sind fast alle Unigebäude innerhalb von maximal 15 Minuten fußläufig erreichbar.

Zu den wichtigsten Gebäuden für internationale Studenten am Western Bank Campus zählen, neben dem Firth Court, die Student’s Union und das University House, beide befinden sich schräg gegenüber des Firth Court. Direkt hinter dem Firth Court liegt die Parkanlage Weston Park mit einem kleinen Pond, auf die Studenten sowohl von der anliegenden Western Bank Library als auch vom Arts Tower aus blicken können.

Überqueren Studierende die angrenzende Mushroom Lane, gelangen sie zum Crooks Valley Park und dem Boating Lake. Der Crooks Valley Park dient nicht nur der Entspannung, sondern dort finden im Freien und in den Sporthallen sowie dem Uni-Fitnessstudio zahlreiche Outdoor- und Indoor-Sportevents statt.

Zentral zwischen Western Bank und St. George’s befindet sich das Information Common, der Hot Spot für Studenten, um einen modernen und ruhigen Platz zum Lernen zu finden. Östlich die Broad Lane entlang kommen Studenten zum Kern des St. George’s Campus. Von historischer Sehenswürdigkeit sind dort das Sir Frederick Mappin Building und die St George’s Church, nach der der Campus benannt ist.

Die Hochschulstadt Sheffield

Die Stadt Sheffield ist neben Leeds und York eines der Oberzentren der nordenglischen Grafschaft Yorkshire. Mit ihren 500.000 Einwohnern zählt Sheffield zu den acht größten Städten Englands nach London.

Die Ursprünge der Stadt gehen auf angelsächsische und dänische Siedlungen zurück, die am heutigen Ort der Stadt im frühen Mittelalter begründet wurden. Im 13. Jahrhundert wurde ein erster Markt begründet und Sheffield entwickelte sich zu einer kleinen Stadt. Bereits im 14. Jahrhundert war die Stadt für die Produktion von Messern bekannt. Die Metallverarbeitung sollte für Sheffield auch weiterhin das wichtigste wirtschaftliche Standbein bleiben. Verschiedene Innovationen wie z.B. neue Techniken für die Stahlerzeugung wurden im Laufe der Jahrhunderte in Sheffield entwickelt, so dass die Stadt im Zuge der industriellen Revolution im 19. Jahrhundert eine wirtschaftliche Blüte durch die Stahlproduktion erlebte. Das Erscheinungsbild der Stadt war so lange durch die Arbeiterviertel geprägt.

Seit der Rückentwicklung der Stahlindustrie in den 80er-Jahren durchlebt Sheffield einen stetigen Wandel, der auch eine Umstrukturierung des Stadtbilds zur Folge hat. Auf dem Gelände der alten Stahlwerke entstand 1990 ein großes Einkaufszentrum und in der Innenstadt wurden verschiedene neue Gebäude wie die Sheffield Arena, das Don Valley Stadium oder die Sheffield Galleries gebaut, die auch stellvertretend für den Wechsel von der Industriestadt hin zum modernen Dienstleistungs-, Medien- und Kulturstandort stehen.

Obwohl Sheffield insgesamt stark durch Industrie geprägt wurde, ist die Stadt mit über 50 Parks und 150 Waldgebieten sehr grün. Nach den nationalen Kriminalitätsstatistiken gilt Sheffield außerdem als eine der sichersten Städte Englands. Dies und die anhaltende Entwicklung der Stadt macht Sheffield zu einem attraktiven pulsierenden Zentrum voll neuer Möglichkeiten und Diversität, so dass die Stadt für jeden Geschmack etwas zu bieten hat.

Auch nach dem Austritt Großbritanniens aus der Europäischen Union werden EU-Studenten an britischen Universitäten zunächst einmal wie einheimische Studenten behandelt. Wer von euch mit dem Gedanken spielt, ab  Herbst 2019 an einer Universität in England zu studieren, der zahlt die sogenannten Home Fees und hat zudem die Möglichkeit, einen Student Loan von der britischen Regierung zu erhalten.

Beschreibung

An den sieben hochmodernen Fakultäten der University of Sheffield können internationale Studenten aus mehr 370 Bachelorstudiengänge. Laut der Times Higher Education Student Experience Survey 2017 ist die University of Sheffield die beste der Russell Group-Universitäten in Bezug auf Studienerfahrung. 

Über eine Dauer von drei Jahren können Studenten innovative Fachrichtungen wie Business, SportsEngineering oder Medicine studieren. In der Regel wird der Studiengang als Bachelor of Honours abgeschlossen. Einige Bachelorstudiengänge an der University of Sheffield können auch in Teilzeit studiert werden.

Der Bachelor with Honours ermöglicht es, anschließend direkt in entsprechende Master- oder Promotionsstudiengänge einzusteigen.

Voraussetzungen

Wer ein Bachelorstudium an der University of Sheffield beginnen möchte, muss ein gutes Abitur vorweisen können. Außerdem müssen internationale Bewerber über ausreichende Englischkenntnisse verfügen. Diese müssen sie über einen standardisierten Sprachtest wie den TOEFL oder IELTS nachweisen. 

Bewerber mit unzureichenden Testergebnissen können eine bedingte Zulassung zum Studium an der University of Sheffield erhalten. Bei der Ankunft an der Hochschule müssen sie dann den University of Sheffield English Proficiency Test (USEPT) erfolgreich absolvieren. Erst dann dürfen sie mit dem Studium an der University of Sheffield beginnen.

Für einige wenige Bachelorstudiengänge bestehen noch individuelle weitere Voraussetzungen.

Beschreibung

Die University of Sheffield bietet an ihren sieben Fakultäten eine Vielzahl an Masterstudiengängen an, für die sich auch internationale Studenten bewerben können.

Bei der Mehrheit der Masterprogramme handelt es sich um sogenannte Tought Courses, das heißt, dass das Studium vorrangig aus dem Besuch bestimmter Lehrveranstaltungen besteht. Internationale Studenten können sich an der School of Law der University of Sheffield für ein LLM-Studium bewerben. Angeboten werden fünf verschiedene LLM-Programme: The Sheffield LLM, LLM in European Law, Corporate and Commercial Law, International Law and Global Justice sowie LLM in Law (Doshisha). Mit Ausnahme des LLM in Law (Doshisha), dessen Studiendauer zwei Jahre beträgt, dauern alle Programme ein Jahr.

Der „klassische“ Sheffield LLM bietet die größte Flexibilität hinsichtlich der Kurswahl. Belegt werden können hier sämtliche Lehrveranstaltungen aus allen LLM-Programmen. Dadurch können sich die Studierenden ein breit angelegtes, rechtswissenschaftliches Wissen aneignen.
