Die University of Maine (UMaine) in Orono, Maine wurde im Jahr 1865 als Maine College of Agriculture and the Mechanic Arts gegründet. Seit 1897 trägt die Bildungseinrichtung in Neuengland ihren heutigen Namen. Die University of Maine ist die bedeutendste staatliche Forschungsuniversität des Bundesstaates.

Die UMaine bietet ein breit gefächertes Studienangebot im Undergraduate- und Graduate-Bereich. Es umfasst verschiedenste Fächer wie Business Administration, Engineering, Computer Science oder Wildlife Ecology. In einigen Bereichen stechen Forschung und Lehre der University of Maine besonders positiv hervor. Zu diesen sogenannten Signature Areas gehören etwa Forestry and the Environment, Marine Science sowie das College of Engineering.

Internationale Studierende können an der University of Maine ein Bachelor- oder Masterstudium absolvieren. Auch eine Promotion ist möglich. Darüber hinaus bietet die UMaine Sprachkurse an und es gibt die Möglichkeit, ein oder zwei Auslandssemester an der Universität zu absolvieren.

Campus

Der Campus der University of Maine liegt auf Marsh Island, umgeben vom Stillwater River und Penobscot River, in Orono, einer Ortschaft im US-Bundesstaat Maine.

Das Herz des Campus ist die University of Maine Mall. Diese parkähnliche Anlage wurde vom berühmten Landschaftsarchitekten Frederik Law Olmstedt entworfen. Er kreierte auch den weltbekannten Central Park in New York City. An einem Ende der Mall steht mit der Raymond H. Fogler Library die größte Bibliothek in Maine.

Auf dem Campus mischen sich schöne alte Bauwerke wie die Bibliothek oder die Stevens Hall mit ihrem weißen Turm mit moderneren Gebäuden. Neben hervorragend ausgestatten akademischen Einrichtungen beherbergt der Campus der UMaine unter anderem auch Sportstätten. Dazu gehören beispielsweise ein Fitnesscenter, ein Football-Feld oder eine Eishockey-Arena.

Ein wenig abseits des Campus liegen zwei Farmen, Witter Farm und Rogers Farm. Dort finden teilweise Lehrveranstaltungen in den Bereichen Agrar- und Forstwissenschaften statt. Rund zwei Stunden von Orono entfernt in Walpole liegt das Darling Marine Center, das ebenfalls zur UMaine gehört.

 


Wohnen

Internationale Studierende an der University of Maine können in einer Unterkunft On- oder Off-Campus wohnen. Studenten im ersten Jahr müssen in einen Wohnheim auf dem Campus wohnen.

Die Hochschulstadt Orono

Orono liegt im Zentrum des US-Bundesstaates Maine im Nordosten der USA. Der Ort hat rund 10.000 Einwohner und wird als typische College Town von der University of Maine dominiert. Die nächstgelegene größere Stadt ist Bangor, nur wenige Meilen entfernt. Mit 33.000 Einwohnern ist Bangor die drittgrößte Stadt in Maine und bietet viele Möglichkeiten zum Ausgehen und Einkaufen.

Der Bundesstaat Maine ist berühmt für seine landschaftliche Schönheit und besonders für Outdoor-Fans ein beliebtes Reiseziel. Viele Besucher zieht beispielsweise der Acadia National Park an. Er liegt rund 50 Meilen von Orono entfernt und gehört zu den populärsten Nationalparks der Vereinigten Staaten.

Orono ist darüber hinaus ein guter Ausgangspunkt, um die Highlights der Ostküste der USA zu entdecken. Ein Flug vom nahegelegenen Flughafen in Bangor nach New York City zum Beispiel dauert nur eine Stunde. Bis nach Washington D.C. benötigt man mit dem Flugzeug 2 Stunden.

Beschreibung

Internationale Studierende können an der University of Maine ein Bachelorstudium in vielen verschiedenen Fächern aufnehmen. Dazu zählen unter anderem Business Administration, Engineering, Journalism und viele verschiedene umweltwissenschaftliche sowie agrar- und forstwissenschaftliche Studiengänge.

Die University of Maine hat eines der ältesten Honors-Programme des Landes. Am Honors College der UMaine können besonders geeignete Studierende einen Honors-Abschluss erlangen.

Die Universität bietet mehrere 5-Year Degree Programs an. Dies sind entweder Dual Degrees in zwei Studienfächern oder kombinierte Bachelor-/Masterstudiengänge.

Voraussetzungen

Bewerber für ein Bachelorstudium an der University of Maine benötigen das Abitur und ausreichend gute Englischkenntnisse. Die Englischkenntnisse sind in der Regel über standardisierte Sprachtests wie IELTS oder TOEFL nachzuweisen.

Internationale Studierende können auch zugelassen werden, wenn sie die sprachlichen Voraussetzungen nicht erfüllen. In diesem Fall müssen sie vor Beginn des Fachstudiums einen Sprachkurs an der University of Maine absolvieren.

Beschreibung

Die University of Maine bietet eine Vielzahl an Masterstudiengängen an. Dadurch, dass sie alle an der speziellen Graduate School der UMaine angeboten werden, kann man sich dort besonders gut auf die Bedürfnisse der Masterstudenten konzentrieren.

Zu den angebotenen Studienfächern zählen viele naturwissenschaftliche, umweltwissenschaftliche sowie agrar- und forstwissenschaftliche Studiengänge und unter anderem auch Fächer wie Engineering, Psychology oder Music.

Voraussetzungen

Bewerber für ein Masterstudium an der University of Maine müssen bereits ein Bachelorstudium erfolgreich abgeschlossen haben.

Zudem benötigen sie ausreichend gute Englischkenntnisse. Diese müssen sie in der Regel über Mindestpunktzahlen im TOEFL nachweisen. Teilweise werden auch IELTS oder PTE Academic akzeptiert. Zum Teil können die geforderten Mindestpunktzahlen im TOEFL höher ausfallen als unten angegeben.

Sollten Bewerber die sprachlichen Voraussetzungen nicht erfüllen, müssen sie einen Englischkurs absolvieren.

Zusätzlich müssen die Bewerber in der Regel ihre Ergebnisse in einem akademischen Zulassungstest einreichen. In den meisten Fällen wird ein Testergebnis in der Graduate Record Examination (GRE) gefordert, teilweise ein Testergebnis im Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) oder Miller Analogies Test (MAT).

Je nach Studienfach können noch weitere Voraussetzungen hinzukommen.

Voraussetzungen

Bewerber für eine Promotion an der University of Maine benötigen einen akademischen Abschluss, je nach Studiengang einen Master- oder einen guten Bachelorabschluss. Welcher Abschluss gefordert wird, kann unter den jeweiligen Studiengängen eingesehen werden.

Darüber hinaus müssen die Bewerber in der Regel über den TOEFL ausreichend gute Englischkenntnisse nachweisen. Teilweise werden auch IELTS und PTE Academic als Sprachnachweis akzeptiert. Die geforderten Punktzahlen können zum Teil höher ausfallen, als unten angeben.

Bewerber, die die sprachlichen Voraussetzungen nicht erfüllen, müssen einen Englischkurs belegen.

Mit der Bewerbung müssen in der Regel außerdem GRE (Graduate Record Examination)-Testergebnisse  eingereicht werden.

Voraussetzungen

Bewerber für ein Auslandssemester an der University of Maine müssen das Abitur vorweisen können und bereits an einer Hochschule eingeschrieben sein.

Darüber hinaus müssen die Studierenden ausreichend gute Englischkenntnisse haben, die über einen standardisierten Sprachtest wie den IELTS oder den TOEFL nachzuweisen sind. Bewerber, können auch ohne ausreichende Sprachkenntnisse zugelassen werden, müssen dann aber vor Beginn des Fachstudiums an der University of Maine einen Englischtest absolvieren.

Beschreibung

Am Intensive Language Institute der University of Maine können internationale Studierende Englischkurse absolvieren.

Die Sprachkurse sind in erster Linie darauf ausgerichtet, die Teilnehmer für ein Studium an der UMaine oder an einer anderen Hochschule sprachlich fit zu machen.

Dafür bietet die University of Maine beispielsweise das UMaine Bridge Program an. Dieses richtet sich an Studierende, die zwar die akademischen, nicht jedoch die sprachlichen Voraussetzungen für ein Studium an der University of Maine erfüllen. Der Kurs bietet ihnen die Möglichkeit, ihr sprachlichen Fähigkeiten auf das geforderte Niveau zu bringen, während sie an der UMaine bereits Fachkurse für ihr Studium belegen. Die Dauer des Programms ist abhängig von der Punktzahl in einem standardisierten Sprachtest wie dem TOEFL zum Zeitpunkt der Bewerbung.

Die Studenten lernen am IEI in kleinen Kursen und dürfen alle Einrichtungen auf dem Campus der University of Maine nutzen.
