Hochschulportrait
Die 1900 durch Königin Victoria gegründete University of Birmingham war die erste Universität in England, an der alle Menschen ungeachtet ihrer Herkunft und Religion zum Studium zugelassen wurden. Vorreiter war sie auch beim Einrichten einer Faculty of Commerce und einer Medical School, und sie verfügte als erste über ein Studentenwohnheim für Frauen.
Fünf akademische Colleges bilden die Hochschule: Arts and Law, Engineering and Physical Sciences, Life and Environmental Sciences, Medical and Dental Sciences sowie Social Sciences. Diese bestehen jeweils aus mehreren verschiedenen Schools. College Contact kann Studenten für die Studiengänge im Postgraduate-Bereich oder für das Semesterprogramm vermitteln.
Bereits acht der Mitarbeiter und ehemaligen Studenten wurden mit dem Nobelpreis ausgezeichnet, darunter zum Beispiel der Politiker Lord Robert Cecil, der eine Zeitlang Leiter der Universität war, oder der Chemiker Francis Aston.
Im renommierten Guardian University Guide 2013/14 schaffte es die University of Birmingham auf den 62. Platz, und auch in den Financial Times and Economist Business School World Rankings gehört sie stets zu den besten 100. Die Universität ist außerdem Gründungsmitglied des globalen Netzwerks Universitas 21, zu dem 27 angesehene Hochschulen auf der ganzen Welt gehören.

Campus
Der Hauptcampus der University of Birmingham ist der Edgbaston Campus im gleichnamigen Stadtteil, wo sich auch der universitätseigene Winterbourne Botanic Garden befindet. Von hier aus sind es etwa fünf Kilometer bis ins Stadtzentrum.
In der Mitte des Geländes steht der Joseph Chamberlain Memorial Clock Tower, der auch liebevoll "Old Joe" genannt wird und den man von vielen Stellen in der Stadt aus sehen kann, da er der höchste frei stehende Uhrenturm der Welt ist. Die umliegenden Universitätsgebäude sehen speziell aus, denn sie haben eine Kuppel als Dach und sind in einem Halbkreis um den Turm gruppiert.
Sie bestehen aus roten Backsteinen, die zu einem architektonischen Markenzeichen von mehreren Universitäten geworden sind, neben Birmingham zum Beispiel auch in Manchester und Sheffield. Der "Red Brick" gilt als Synonym für das Bürgertum.
Im Barber Institute of Fine Arts, das zur Universität gehört, hängen echte Werke von Malern wie Van Gogh, Picasso oder Monet. Interessanterweise hat die University of Birmingham außerdem als einzige im Land einen eigenen Bahnhof. Hier halten die Züge der Cross-City Line.
Südlich vom Hauptcampus liegt der etwas neuere Selly Oak Campus mit hauptsächlich theologischen und sozialwissenschaftlichen Einrichtungen. Darüber hinaus gibt es noch verschiedene Institute, die ebenfalls zur Universität gehören und in ganz Birmingham verteilt sind.

Die Hochschulstadt Birmingham
Birmingham ist mit knapp über 1 Million Einwohner die zweitgrößte Stadt Großbritanniens und liegt ca. 150 Kilometer nordwestlich von London in der Region West Midlands. Nach London gilt Birmingham als die "zweite Stadt Englands", was sich sowohl auf ihren wirtschaftlichen als auch kulturellen Status bezieht. Birmingham bekam im zwölften Jahrhundert das Marktrecht verliehen, was den Grundstein für die Entwicklung zum Handelszentrum legte, die in den folgenden Jahrhunderten eintrat und aus dem Dorf Birmingham eine kleine Stadt machte. Bereits im 16. Jahrhundert begann eine sich entwickelnde Metallverarbeitungsindustrie die in der Region reichlich vorhandenen natürlichen Erz- und Kohlevorkommen zu nutzen. Der Handel und die Metallindustrie wurden so zu den wirtschaftlichen Standbeinen Birminghams.
Die Industrialisierung im 19. Jahrhundert brachte der Stadt ein beträchtliches Wachstum, das durch den Bau des Kanalsystems und der Eisenbahn beflügelt wurde. Im zweiten Weltkrieg wurde Birmingham aufgrund der strategisch wichtigen Industrie stark bombardiert, so dass das Stadtbild heute von zahlreichen Gebäuden aus der Zeit des Wiederaufbaus nach dem Krieg geprägt ist. Der Anteil der Schwerindustrie an der Wirtschaft Birminghams ist, wie auch in vielen anderen Städten Englands, seit den Siebziger Jahren kontinuierlich zurückgegangen. Da der Handel jedoch auch schon immer eine große Rolle im wirtschaftlichen Spektrum der Stadt spielte, konnte Birmingham den Wechsel von der industriell geprägten hin zur Dienstleistungswirtschaft leichter vollziehen als andere alte Industriestädte. Die größten Arbeitgeber der Stadt sind heute Unternehmen aus den Sektoren Handel, Dienstleistungen und Tourismus. Die Stadt ist außerdem ein bedeutender Medienstandort mit drei Tageszeitungen, einer großen Zahl von Radiosendern und Produktionsstätten der British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC).
Birmingham ist auch eines der wichtigsten Kulturzentren Englands. Das City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra ist weltbekannt, genauso wie das Birmingham Royal Ballet und verschiedene moderne Formationen wie die Bands Black Sabbath, UB40 und Duran Duran, die alle aus Birmingham kommen. Bekannte Veranstaltungsorte in der Stadt sind die Symphony Hall und die National Indoor Arena. Die Stadt bietet außerdem eine große Zahl verschiedener Theater und Museen. Im Stadtgebiet gibt es große Parks, die zum Ausruhen und Entspannen einladen. In den vielen Clubs und Pubs der Stadt kommt aber auch das Nachtleben nicht zu kurz. Wer es sportlich mag, kann seine Freizeit auch bei Spielen der zahlreichen Sportteams verbringen. Als Metropole im Nordwesten Englands bietet Birmingham verschiedenste Angebote zur Gestaltung von Arbeit und Freizeit und präsentiert sich so als interessante Option für jeden Geschmack.

Studienprogramme
Beschreibung
Die University of Birmingham hat sehr viele verschiedene Bachelor-Studiengänge in den unterschiedlichsten Bereichen im Angebot, die auch internationalen Studierenden offen stehen.
In der Regel haben die Studiengänge eine Dauer von drei Jahren, einige können aber auch auf Grund von Pflicht-Praktika oder Study Abroad Programmen eine Länge von vier Jahren haben.

Beschreibung
Die University of Birmingham bietet eine sehr große Anzahl an Masterstudiengängen an, darunter auch einige im Fernstudium. Auf dem Campus kann man zum Beispiel Analytical Genomics, Caribbean Literature oder Railway Systems Engineering and Integration studieren, aber es gibt auch "normalere" Möglichkeiten wie Literature oder Business.
Neben den unterrichtsbasierten Masterabschlüssen (by Coursework) kann man auch forschungsbasierte Abschlüsse (by Research) erlangen.

Beschreibung
An der Birmingham Business School haben Studenten die Möglichkeit, einen Master of Business Administration (MBA) zu machen. Er wird in den Bereichen Global Banking and Finance, Strategy and Procurement Management und Public Service angeboten.
Ein solcher Studiengang dauert 12, 21 oder 24 Monate, was von den Englischkenntnissen der Studenten abhängt. Einige werden auch als Teilzeitmodell angeboten, wofür man dann etwas länger braucht.
Außerdem gibt es noch den Executive MBA, der sich besonders an Berufstätige richtet, die sich ihre Studienzeiten flexibel einteilen möchten. Er kann innerhalb von zwei bis sechs Jahren abgeschlossen werden.
Die Birmingham Business School existiert bereits seit 1902 und war somit die erste im ganzen Land. Sie legt besonders viel Wert auf Internationalität und beherbergt Studenten aus der ganzen Welt.
Der MBA-Studiengang wurde bei den 2011 Global Financial Times MBA Rankings auf den 68. Platz weltweit gewählt, und die Schule ist sowohl von AMBA (Association of MBAs) als auch von EQUIS (European Quality Improvement System) akkreditiert.

Voraussetzungen
Für die Teilnahme am allgemeinen MBA-Studiengang muss man einen guten Bachelorabschluss mit Honours haben und über mindestens fünf Jahre anschließender Berufserfahrung verfügen. Möchte man einen der länger dauernden Studiengänge oder einen mit Schwerpunktsetzung absolvieren, genügen drei Jahre im Job.
Außerdem müssen internationale Studenten anhand einer Mindestpunktzahl in einem standardisierten Sprachtest einen Nachweis über ausreichende Englischkenntnisse erbringen. Je nach Dauer des Studiengangs sind die Punktzahlen verschieden; im Folgenden werden die niedrigsten genannt, die für den 24-monatigen Studiengang gelten.

Beschreibung
Für Weiterbildungen im rechtswissenschaftlichen Bereich bietet die University of Birmingham verschiedene Studiengänge an, die mit einem Master of Laws (LLM) abschließen.
Neben dem allgemeinen Programm (LLM General) gibt es zusätzlich noch fünf Modelle, die ein konkretes Spezialisierungsgebiet beinhalten. So kann beispielsweise den LLM in Commercial Law oder in Criminal Law machen.
Der allgemeine LLM ist hingegen weitgehend flexibel angelegt und die Studenten haben die Möglichkeit aus zahlreichen Wahlbereichen ihr individuelles Programm zusammenzusetzen.
Alle angebotenen Modelle haben eine Dauer von rund einem Jahr. Allerdings bietet die University of Birmingham auch berufstätigen Juristen an, den LLM in einem Teilzeitstudium neben dem Job in zwei Jahren zu absolvieren.

Voraussetzungen
Grundvoraussetzung einer Bewerbung für ein LLM-Studium an University of Birmingham ist ein abgeschlossenes rechtswissenschaftliches Bachelorstudium. Unter Umständen kann auch ein Studium aus einem anderen Fachbereich ausreichend sein, dieses muss dann aber mit der Common Professional Examination (CPE) ergänzt werden.
Internationale Bewerber müssen durch eine Mindestpunktzahl in einem standarisierten Sprachtest (TOEFL oder IELTS) ausreichende Englischkenntnisse nachweisen.
