Die Northern Michigan University (NMU) wurde im Jahr 1899 als Northern State Normal School gegründet. Lange konzentrierte man sich hier ganz auf die Ausbildung von Lehrern, doch mit den Jahren wuchs das Angebot an Studiendisziplinen immer weiter an. Im Jahre 1963 erhielt die Hochschule den Status einer Universität.

Internationale Studierende können an der Northern Michigan University ein Bachelor- oder Masterstudium absolvieren und sind auch für ein Auslandssemester oder Academic Gap Year willkommen. An der NMU gibt es relativ wenige internationale Studenten, sodass die Studierenden leicht mit einheimischen Kommilitonen in Kontakt kommen und tief in die US-amerikanische Kultur eintauchen können.

Das Studienangebot der Northern Michigan University umfasst mehr als 180 Studienabschlüsse in verschiedenen Fachrichtungen. Die Studieninhalte werden vorwiegend von Professoren in meist kleinen Kursen vermittelt, sodass die Studierenden gut betreut werden können.

Die NMU legt nicht nur Wert darauf, den Studierenden die für den späteren Beruf notwendigen Fähigkeiten zu vermittelt. Sie will die Studierenden auch zu kritischem und unabhängigem Denken anregen.

Campus

Der Campus der Northern Michigan University in Marquette liegt nur einen Katzensprung vom Ufer des Lake Superior entfernt. Auch in die Innenstadt von Marquette ist es nicht weit. Auf dem teilweise bewaldeten Campus selbst ist alles fußläufig gut zu erreichen.

Zum Campus gehören Dutzende Einrichtungen, die akademischen und administrativen Zwecken oder der Freizeitgestaltung dienen. Darunter befinden sich moderne Lehreinrichtungen wie Labore, Computer-Labs oder Werkstätten. Auf dem Campus gibt es unter anderem auch eine TV- und Radiostation, diverse Verpflegungsangebote sowie Galerien.

Das auffälligste Gebäude auf dem Campus ist der Superior Dome, die größte Holzkuppel der Welt. Hier finden unter anderem die Heimspiele des Footballteams der Uni statt.


Wohnen

Internationale Studierende sind unter Umständen dazu verpflichtet, in einer Unterkunft auf dem Campus zu wohnen.Teilweise ist es auch möglich, in einer Wohnung abseits des Campus zu leben.

Die Hochschulstadt Marquette

Die Kleinstadt Marquette liegt auf der oberen Halbinsel des US-amerikanischen Bundesstaates Michigan am Ufer das Lake Superior, dem größten Süßwassersee der Welt. Sie hat rund 20.000 Einwohner. Marquette gehört zu den sichersten Hochschulstandorten in den Vereinigten Staaten.

Die Innenstadt von Marquette lockt mit einigen historischen Gebäuden sowie verschiedenen Geschäften und Restaurants. Über das Jahr verteilt finden verschiedene Veranstaltungen statt, etwa Musik-, Kunst- oder Sportveranstaltungen.

Die Gegend rund im Marquette zeichnet sich durch tolle Naturlandschaften aus, die zahlreiche Freizeitmöglichkeiten bieten. Passionierte Biker und Wanderer kommen in den Wäldern auf ihre Kosten, Wassersportler können sich auf dem Lake Superior austoben und Skifahrer und Snowboarder können im Winter am nahegelegenen Marquette Mountain ihrer Leidenschaft nachgehen.

Die Sommer in Marquette sind mit einer Durchschnittstemperatur von 20°C sehr angenehm. Die Winter sind kalt mit Temperaturen um den Gefrierpunkt.

Voraussetzungen

Bewerber für ein Bachelorstudium an der NMU benötigen das Abitur. Der Notendurchschnitt GPA muss bei mindestens 2.25 liegen. Außerdem müssen Bewerber über Mindestpunktzahlen im TOEFL oder IELTS ausreichend gute Englischkenntnisse nachweisen.

Sie können im Auslandssemester fach- und semesterübergreifend Kurse aus fast allen Studiengängen der NMU wählen, einzig Nursing- sowie Online-Kurse sind ausgenommen. Ein Semester an der NMU ist sowohl für Bachelor- als auch für Masterstudenten möglich, es können jedoch nur Kurse aus dem Bachelorbereich gewählt werden.

Die Studiengebühren beinhalten bis zu 16 Credits, was in der Regel vier bis fünf Kursen entspricht.

Gegen einen Aufpreis können Studierende noch einen weiteren Kurs belegen. In den Studiengebühren sind unter anderem eine Student Services Fee und ein Bus Pass enthalten.

Bitte beachtet, dass die regulären Studiengebühren für das "Superior Experience"-Programm bei US$ 7,868 liegen. Alle College-Contact-Bewerber erhalten jedoch automatisch ein Stipendium in Höhe von US 1,100, so dass sich die Studiengebühren auf die oben genannten US$ 6,768 pro Semester reduzieren.


Finanzierungsmöglichkeiten

Studierende haben die Möglichkeit, für ihr Semester an der NMU Auslands-BAföG zu beantragen. Das beinhaltet einen Zuschuss zu den Studiengebühren in Höhe von bis zu EUR 4600 sowie finanzielle Unterstützung bei Reise- und Lebenshaltungskosten sowie der Krankenversicherung.

Eine weitere Finanzierungsmöglichkeit für ein Auslandssemester an der NMU können die Teilstipendien von College Contact darstellen. Sie werden zweimal im Jahr an Semesterstudenten verschiedener Fachbereiche vergeben und haben einen Wert von jeweils EUR 1000.


Voraussetzungen

Bewerber für ein Auslandssemester an der NMU benötigen Abitur und ausreichend gute Englischkenntnisse.

Die Sprachkenntnisse müssen über Mindestpunktzahlen in IELTS oder TOEFL oder mit dem DAAD-Sprachzeugnis nachgewiesen werden. Alternativ können die Bewerber auch ein Telefon- oder Skypeinterview mit dem International Programs Office der NMU führen, welches einen formalen Sprachnachweis ersetzt.

Des Weiteren sind auch die Noten der Semesterbewerber wichtig, ihr Notendurchschnitt muss einem GPA von 3.0 oder höher entsprechen.

Beschreibung

Internationale Studierende können College of Business der Northern Michigan University einen Master of Business Administration (MBA) erwerben. Zukünftigen Managern werden die Fähigkeiten vermittelt, die sie benötigen um sich den Herausforderungen der heutigen Geschäftswelt zu stellen. Zentral im Management ist das Treffen von Entscheidungen, deshalb steht dieses Thema auch im Fokus des Studiengangs. Bewerber für ein MBA-Studium an der NMU müssen bereits ein Bachelorstudium erfolgreich absolviert haben, der Grade Point Average (GPA) sollte bei 3.0 oder höher liegen. Abiturienten können direkt nach der Schule ein Academic Gap Year an der Northern Michigan University absolvieren. Dafür müssen sie nicht an einer anderen Hochschule immatrikuliert sein. Für ein oder zwei Semester können Gap-Year-Studenten Bachelorkurse aus unterschiedlichen Fachrichtungen besuchen, die keine besonderen Vorkenntnisse erfordern.
