Summer Sessions in den USA
Die so gennaten Summer Sessions stellen eine besondere Form des Studiums dar, wie sie von einer Vielzahl vorwiegend US-amerikanischer Universitäten in den eigentlichen Semesterferien zwischen Mai und September angeboten wird. Dabei handelt es sich um "komprimierte" Semester mit einer Länge von meist fünf oder sechs Wochen, während der die Teilnehmer meistens zwei oder maximal drei Kurse aus dem vielfältigen Lehrangebot der Universität belegen.
Natürlich kann jeden Sommer nur eine gewisse Auswahl aus dem enormen Kursangebot der Universitäten angeboten werden kann. Dennoch übersteigt das Angebot – in der Regel kann unter 300-500 Kursen ausgewählt werden – das für deutsche Studenten Gewohnte bei Weitem. Außerdem werden auch im Rahmen der Summer Sessions in den USA Kurse aus fast allen Fachbereichen angeboten, so dass das Spektrum von klassischen Themen wie „Introduction to International Business“ oder „Cell Biology“, über nordamerikaspezifische Themen wie „The Emerging United States to 1865“ und „American Constitutional Law“, bis hin zu hoch spezialisierten oder auch etwas „exotisch“ anmutenden Kursen wie „Three-Dimensional Computing Techniques in Architecture“ oder "Implications of Racism for Social Work Practice“ reicht.
Das Niveau und die Leistungsanforderungen genauso wie die Inhalte und die Stoffmenge sind im Sommer normalerweise identisch zu denen während des übrigen akademischen Jahres, die Intensität und die Wochenstundenzahl der Kurse ist aufgrund der kürzeren Dauer der Summer Sessions um einiges höher. Natürlich werden im Rahmen von Summer Sessions in den USA ganz normale universitäre „Credits“ erworben und nach Abschluss des Aufenthalts „Transcripts“ erstellt, so dass es nach vorheriger Absprache mit den Professoren und Prüfungsämtern in Deutschland trotz des verhältnismäßig kurzen Zeitraums der Summer Sessions für deutsche Studenten häufig möglich ist, sich die belegten Kurse für das Studium an der Heimatuniversität anrechnen zu lassen.
Durch die große Anzahl von Fächern und das Angebot vieler hoch spezialisierter Kurse sind die Summer Sessions aber ebenso ideal für eine gezielte Weiterbildung für Berufstätige oder sonstige Interessierte. Selbst Schüler der Oberstufen an deutschen Gymnasien und Gesamtschulen können an einigen Universitäten bereits an den Summer Sessions teilnehmen und so in ihrem Wunschfach "Uni-Luft" schnuppern.
