Die UCSC wurde 1965 gegründet und gehörte von Anfang an zum renommierten „University of California“-System. Aufgrund ihrer Studentenzahlen und ihrer Struktur bietet die UCSC die Vorzüge einer respektierten Forschungsuniversität und gleichzeitig ein Maß an persönlicher Betreuung und Aufmerksamkeit, wie es sonst eher an kleinen Colleges zu finden ist. Sie ist in den USA hoch angesehen für die sehr gute Qualität ihrer Studiengänge und die immense Bedeutung ihrer Forschungsaktivitäten. Der Campus der UCSC gilt als einer der schönsten in den USA. Er bietet eine gelungene Mischung aus preisgekrönter Architektur und einer faszinierenden natürlichen Umgebung mit Mammutbäumen, saftigen grünen Weiden und einem grandiosen Blick auf den Pazifik und die Monterrey Bay. Auf einer Fläche von rund 810 Hektar bietet er neben modernen Vorlesungsgebäuden und voll ausgestatteten Computer- und Multimediaräumen zahlreiche Sporteinrichtungen wie ein wettkampftaugliches Schwimmbecken, ein Fitnesscenter, Tennis- und Basketballplätze, ausgewiesene Joggingstrecken und sogar eigene Bootsanlegestellen. Kulturell interessierte Studenten können unter anderem das Music Center oder das Elena Baskin Visual Arts Center besuchen. Der Campus umfasst überdies zehn „Colleges“ mit ganz unterschiedlicher Architektur und thematischer Ausrichtung, die unter anderem regelmäßige Freizeitaktivitäten und Veranstaltungen organisieren und so zu der sehr lebendigen und kreativen Atmosphäre auf dem Campus der UCSC beitragen.

Stadtprofil Santa Cruz
Santa Cruz im US-Bundesstaat Kalifornien ist mit etwa 55 000 Einwohnern eine relative beschauliche Stadt. Sie liegt in Reichweite der Sierra Nevada und nur ca. 100 Kilometer südlich von San Francisco am nördlichen Rand der Monterey Bay. Der „Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk“, der älteste Vergnügungspark Kaliforniens mit dem „Giant Dipper“ von 1924, sorgt bis heute dafür, dass der Tourismus neben Landwirtschaft und Hochtechnologie die wichtigste Wirtschaftsquelle der Stadt ist. Das Klima ist mild, die höchste Durchschnittstemperatur liegt bei 21 °C und die niedrigste bei 7 °C – optimales Wetter also für alle Arten von Wassersport: Die Stadt ist der Geburtsort des Surfens, denn 1885 wurde diese Sportart hier zum ersten Mal in Kalifornien ausprobiert. Deshalb wird Santa Cruz auch als „Surf City USA“ bezeichnet, und regelmäßig finden internationale Surfwettbewerbe statt. Die Innenstadt ist das Herz von Santa Cruz. Sie bietet eine große Bandbreite an Boutiquen, Straßencafés, Restaurants und ein aufregendes Nachtleben mit Musikveranstaltungen, Kinos, Nachtclubs und vieles mehr. Auch kulturellen Aktivitäten kann man beispielsweise in Galerien oder Museen nachgehen.

Summer Sessions
Beschreibung:An der UC Santa Cruz werden während des Sommers die so genannten "Summer Sessions" angeboten.
Die Summer Sessions sind reguläre Universitätskurse, die sowohl für amerikanische als auch für internationale Studenten angeboten werden, und den Lehrstoff der Kurse des Semesters in einem fünfwöchigen kompakten Kurs zusammenfassen. Ein Kurs besteht in der Regel aus fünf Units, die meisten Teilnehmer belegen zwei Kurse pro Summer Session. Gebühren für die UCSC Summer Sessions
Voraussetzungen:Teilnehmer an den UCSC Summer Sessions müssen zum Zeitpunkt des Programmbeginns mindestens 18 Jahre alt sein und über ausreichend gute Englischkenntnisse verfügen, die über einen standardisierten Sprachtest wie den TOEFL nachzuweisen sind. Unterkünfte der University of California Santa Cruz
Studentenwohnheim
Als Student kann man im University Town Center eine Unterkunft finden. Das UTC liegt direkt in Downtown Santa Cruz.
Alles was man braucht, ist in dem modernen Gebäudekomplex des UTC untergebracht. Hier befinden sich die Unterkünfte selbst, Vorlesungsräume, Computerräume, Studentlounges und auch die Büros der Verwaltung.
Das Gebäude ist sehr sicher - Studenten benötigen eine Chipkarte, um Zugang zu dem gesamten Komplex zu bekommen. Das UTC ist nahe an Buchläden, Restaurants, Cafés und Shops gelegen, der Strand ist lediglich fünf Minuten zu Fuß entfernt.
Alle Zimmer im UTC Dormitory sind als Doppelzimmer ausgelegt. Hier sind sowohl Studenten des Semesterprogramms als auch reguläre UCSC Studenten untergebracht. Die Studentenzimmer sind voll möbliert inklusive einer kleinen Küche mit Mikrowelle, Kochgelegenheit und Kühlschrank sowie einem eigenem Bad. Darüber hinaus hat jedes Studentenzimmer einen High Speed Internetzugang und einen eigenen Telefonanschluss sowie Kabelfernsehen.
Wie in amerikanischen Studentenwohnheimen üblich, bestehen auch im University Town Center für deutsche Verhältnisse strenge Regeln in Bezug auf den Konsum von Alkohol und den Besuch von Freunden/Bekannten in den Zimmern. Jeder sollte diese im Vorhinein in den Anmeldeformularen des UTC nachlesen und sich überlegen, ob er mit diesen Regeln einverstanden ist, bevor er sich für diese Unterkunftsart entscheidet.

Informationen zu Wohnheimen
Private Apartments / Hotels
Private Unterkünfte sind in Santa Cruz nicht ganz leicht zu finden, aber mit etwas Glück und Unterstützung der Universität findet man sicher ein Zimmer in einer Wohngemeinschaft oder ein eigenes Apartment. Natürlich kann es sein, dass diese Art der Unterbringung etwas teurer ist als eine Unterkunft auf dem Campus oder in einer Gastfamilie. Auch sollte man sich über bestimmte versteckte Kosten, wie Kautionen, zusätzliche Stromkosten oder auch die Anschaffung von Möbeln und Haushaltsgegenständen vorab informieren und sich mit den Mietvereinbarungen gut vertraut machen.
Während die UCSC selbst keine WG-Zimmer oder Apartments außerhalb des Universitätsgeländes vermittelt, so stellt sie doch Informationen zur Wohnungssuche zur Verfügung.

Gastfamilien
Für Studenten, die gerne den "American Way of Life" direkt miterleben möchten, bietet sich die Option der Unterkunft über ein Homestay Programm an. Hierbei bekommt man eine Unterkunft bei einer ausgesuchten amerikanischen Familien, die gerne internationale Studenten aufnehmen und dementsprechend aufgeschlossen gegenüber anderen Kulturen sind.
Die amerikanischen Gastfamilien wohnen in der Regel im Umfeld der UCSC, maximal jedoch 20 bis 30 Minuten mit dem Bus entfernt. Beim Homestay hat man die einmalige Möglichkeit ,seine Englischkenntnisse permanent zu vertiefen und einen Einblick in das typische amerikanische Leben zu bekommen, selbst lebenslange Freundschaften können hieraus entstehen. Studenten haben die Auswahl zwischen einem Homestay mit voller Verpflegung oder ohne Verpflegung.
Wer sich überlegt, während des Gastsemesters bei einer amerikanischen Familie zu wohnen, sollte sich natürlich über gewisse Regeln des Zusammenlebens im Klaren sein.
