Beschreibung der Boston University Die bereits 1839 gegründete und 1869 mit ihrem jetzigen Namen versehene Boston University ist heutzutage die viertgrößte private Universität in den USA und ein wichtiges kulturelles, intellektuelles und wissenschaftliches Zentrum an der amerikanischen Ostküste. Ihr Ideal ist das einer klassischen Forschungsuniversität, die es ihren Studenten ermöglicht, nicht erst im Rahmen der weiterführenden Studiengänge, sondern bereits während des Bachelorstudiums erste eigene Forschungserfahrung zu sammeln. Im „America´s Best Colleges Guide 2008“ des US News & World Report liegt die Boston University auch aus diesem Grund auf einem sehr guten 57. Platz aller Universitäten in den USA, die Bachelor- und Masterstudiengänge sowie Doktorgrade anbieten.

Das Gelände der Boston University erstreckt sich über rund 29 Hektar vom historischen Back Bay – Viertel Bostons westwärts am südlichen Ufer des Charles River entlang. Von den „Townhouses“ der Bay State Road bis hin zu modernsten Labors und Vorlesungsräume bietet der Campus der Boston University ein sehr interessantes und diverses Bild. Die Umgebung des Campus´ mit ihren ruhigen, grünen Parks und Plätzen auf der einen und dem quirligen Stadtleben an der Commonwealth Avenue auf der anderen Seite ist ebenfalls sehr reizvoll. Direkt auf dem Campus gibt es insgesamt 17 Bibliotheken mit mehr als zwei Millionen Publikationen. Auch für eine aktive Freizeitgestaltung ist gesorgt: Sportfans finden im Fitness and Recreation Center hervorragende Möglichkeiten, um sich fit zu halten. Kulturell interessierten Studenten werden in der George Sherman Union Filme, Vorträge und Ausstellungen geboten. Im selben Gebäude befindet sich der zentrale „Food Court“ der Boston University mit mehreren Restaurants.
Boston ist die größte Stadt der Region Neuengland und mit etwa 590000 Einwohnern die Hauptstadt des Bundesstaates Massachusetts an der Ostküste der USA. Sie hat ein mildes Klima mit Durchschnittstemperaturen von höchstens 33 °C im Sommer und -9 °C im Winter und besitzt natürliche Häfen, die wegen der starken Zergliederung der Massachusetts Bay angelegt werden konnten. Die Atmosphäre dieses Landstrichs zeichnet sich vor allem darin aus, dem ehemaligen Mutterland England in Kultur und Tradition näher zu sein als der Rest der USA; bis heute wirkt Boston mit den viktorianischen Häusern „very british“. Vor allem in kultureller und historischer Hinsicht hat die Stadt viel zu bieten, beispielsweise den „Freedom Trail“: Ein roter Strich, der über Bürgersteige innerhalb einer Strecke von vier Kilometern zu 16 Stätten der US-amerikanischen Unabhängigkeitsbewegung führt, angefangen beim Stadtpark „Boston Common“ bis hin zum Abschluss in Charlestown. Das „Museum of Fine Arts“ zählt zu den bedeutendsten in Neuengland, und das „Boston Athenæum“ ist eine der ältesten Kultureinrichtungen Massachusetts´ mit Bibliothek und Kunstsammlungen. Weltbekannt sind die „Symphony Hall“ und das in ihr residierende „Boston Symphony Orchestra“. Aber man kann hier seine Freizeit auch anders als kulturell verbringen: Zum Beispiel beim Shoppen, beim Sport oder einfach bei einem Spaziergang, denn Boston als eine der ältesten und wohlhabendsten Städte der USA hat viele schöne Ecken vorzuweisen. Auch das Nachtleben ist sehr lebendig, besonders in den Kneipen an der Newbury Street oder den Nachtclubs in der Lansdowne Street.

 Summer Sessions

Beschreibung: Die Boston University offeriert im Rahmen der Summer Sessions jedes Jahr rund 600 Kurse aus fast allen denkbaren Fachrichtungen. Besonders vielfältig ist das Angebot beispielsweise in den Bereichen Film and Television, Mass Communication, Health Sciences, Business, Economics, Chemistry, Art History, Writing, Hospitality Administration, Engineering und Education.
Speziell für Schüler gibt es an der Boston University im Sommer drei verschiedene Programme: High School Honors, Summer Challenge und Summer Preview. Bei High School Honors können die Schüler innerhalb von sechs Wochen bis zu acht College Credits in zwei Kursen aus dem Undergraduate-Bereich erlangen; die Summer Challenge hat eine Dauer von zwei Wochen und ermöglicht Interessenten die Teilnahme an zwei Kursen mit einem ersten Einblick ins College-Leben, und die Summer Preview bietet das gleiche für etwas jüngere Schüler innerhalb von einer Woche bei nur einem Kurs. Voraussetzungen: Voraussetzung für die Teilnahme an den Summer Sessions an der Boston University sind das Abitur oder die Fachhochschulreife.
Da Englisch die Unterrichtssprache ist, werden gute Englischkenntnisse vorausgesetzt. Die Erbringung eines formalen Nachweises dieser Sprachkenntnisse ist nicht erforderlich, dennoch sollte sich jeder Bewerber im eigenen Interesse sicher sein, ausreichend gut Englisch zu sprechen, um den Kursen folgen zu können, da in der Regel im Unterricht und in der Bewertung der Kurse keine Rücksicht auf eventuelle Sprachbarrieren genommen werden kann.
