Beschreibung der University of California San Diego Die Ursprünge der UCSD liegen in dem 1903 gegründeten Meeresforschungszentrum „Scripts Institution of Oceanography“, das 1910 Teil der University of California wurde. Ihren jetzigen Namen erhielt die UCSD jedoch erst 1960. Von Beginn an spielte die Forschung an der UCSD eine herausragende Rolle. Heute gehört die UCSD zu den bedeutendsten Forschungsuniversitäten in den USA, genießt weltweite Anerkennung und beheimatet derzeit acht Nobelpreisträger sowie zahlreiche mit weiteren Preisen ausgezeichnete Forscher und Professoren. Der „America´s Best Colleges Guide 2008“ des US News & World Report führt die UCSD auf einem hervorragenden 38. Platz unter allen Universitäten in den USA, die Bachelor-, und Masterabschlüsse sowie Doktorgrade anbieten. Unter den staatlichen Universitäten liegt die UCSD landesweit sogar auf dem 8. Platz.

Die UCSD liegt in La Jolla, einem sehr beliebten Stadtteil San Diegos einige Kilometer nördlich des Stadtzentrums. Der rund 485 Hektar große Campus befindet sich direkt an der Küste des Pazifischen Ozeans in einem Waldgebiet mit Blick auf das Meer. Er ist dezentral angelegt und umfasst neben den gemeinsam von allen Studenten genutzten Vorlesungsgebäuden, Forschungsinstituten und Serviceeinrichtungen auch sechs „Colleges“ mit unterschiedlicher thematischer Ausrichtung. Ein Wahrzeichen des Campus ist die architektonisch beeindruckende und futuristisch anmutende Geisel Library in der Mitte des Campus. Die Studenten der UCSD finden auf ihrem Campus neben allerlei Studentenorganisationen auch zahlreiche Restaurants, Freizeiteinrichtungen und Sportanlagen. Im Mission Bay Aquatic Center, das von der UCSD und der SDSU gemeinsam geleitet wird, werden Kurse in Wassersportarten wie Surfen, Segeln, Wasserski fahren, Rudern, Wake- und Kiteboarden gegeben.
San Diego ist die zweitgrößte Stadt im Bundesstaat Kalifornien und die siebtgrößte in den USA. Sie wird wegen ihres angenehmen Klimas oft als „America´s finest city“ bezeichnet, denn die Jahresdurchschnittstemperatur liegt bei 21 °C, und es gibt nur wenig Niederschlag. Los Angeles ist nur zweieinhalb Autostunden entfernt, Tijuana in Mexiko sogar nur eine halbe Stunde. Im Westen liegt der Pazifische Ozean mit seinen Stränden, und gerade bei Surfern erfreut sich die Gegend größter Beliebtheit. Im Osten bilden schneebedeckte Berge eine natürliche Grenze. Trotz der großen ethnischen und kulturellen Vielfalt unter den rund 1,25 Millionen Einwohnern gilt die Stadt als eine der sichersten Orte in den USA und ist bekannt für ihre Offenheit und Gastfreundschaft. Es wird dort nie langweilig, da das Freizeitangebot riesig ist: Man kann beispielsweise den Balboa Park besuchen, denn dort gibt es viele Museen wie das Museum of Art oder das Aerospace Museum. Wer sich in seiner Freizeit nicht kulturell betätigen möchte, hat die Möglichkeit, den weltbekannten San Diego Zoo, Sea World oder das Legoland California zu besuchen. Das ist natürlich nur ein minimaler Ausschnitt aus dem breit gefächerten Angebot, das San Diego vorzuweisen hat. Abends sind vor allem bei Studenten das Gaslamp District oder eine der vielen Beach Bars beliebt, um den Tag ruhig ausklingen zu lassen, bevor man sich ins Nachtleben stürzt.

Summer Sessions
Beschreibung:An der UC San Diego werden während des Sommers die so genannten Summer Sessions angeboten.
Diese sind reguläre Universitätskurse, die sowohl für amerikanische als auch für internationale Studenten angeboten werden und den Lehrstoff der Kurse des Semesters in einem mehrwöchigen kompakten Kurs zusammenfassen. So werden Kurse aus fast allen Fachbereichen angeboten, die auch während des Semesters stattfinden.
Es gibt die Sessions I, II und die Special Session. Bei letzterer variieren die Kursdaten, aber die Programme finden innerhalb des genannten Zeitraumes statt und dauern unterschiedlich lange.
Darüber hinaus wird mit "Academic Connections" ein Programm angeboten, welches sich gezielt an Oberstufenschüler zwischen 17 und 18 Jahren richtet und auch für internationale Schüler offen ist. Das Programm findet einmal pro Jahr im Juli statt, dauert drei Wochen und gibt Schülern die Möglichkeit, Hochschulluft zu schnuppern und einen Intensivkurs aus einem für sie interessanten Fachgebiet (z.B. Beneath the Surface: Concepts in Biological Oceanography oder Life on La Frontera: A Critical Look at the U.S./Mexico Border) zu belegen. Bewerber für das "Academic Connections" Programm müssen zwischen 17 und 18 Jahren alt und Oberstufenschüler sein. Unterkünfte der University of California San Diego Apartments auf dem Campus
Studenten, die während der Summer Sessions der UCSD eine Unterkunft suchen, wird die Möglichkeit geboten, für die Dauer des Programms direkt auf dem Universitätsgelände in Apartments zu wohnen.
Die Apartments auf dem Campus werden mit anderen Teilnehmern der Summer Sessions gemeinschaftlich bewohnt, wobei in der Regel vier bis fünf Personen ein Apartment teilen. Jeder Bewohner hat dabei entweder sein eigenes Schlafzimmer oder teilt eines mit einem Mitbewohner als Doppelzimmer. Das Bad, die Küche und das Wohnzimmer werden gemeinschaftlich von den Mitbewohnern benutzt. Ein Internetzugang (LAN) ist vorhanden und kann gegen Gebühr benutzt werden.
Als Bewohner der On-Campus Apartments während der Summer Sessions ist die Verpflegung in Form von drei täglichen Mahlzeiten bereits in den Mietkosten enthalten. Übrigens können Studenten in Summer Sessions auch für die Dauer von fünf Wochen buchen, obwohl hier Preise für vier Wochen angegeben sind.

Apartments auf dem Campus
Private Apartments / Hotels
Private Unterkünfte sind in San Diego nicht ganz leicht zu finden, aber mit etwas Glück und Unterstützung der Universität findet man sicher ein Zimmer in einer Wohngemeinschaft oder ein eigenes Apartment. Natürlich kann es sein, dass diese Art der Unterbringung etwas teurer ist als eine andere Unterkunft. Auch sollte man sich über bestimmte versteckte Kosten, wie Kautionen, zusätzliche Stromkosten oder Ähnliches informieren und sich mit den Mietvereinbarungen gut vertraut machen.
Während die UCSD selbst nicht über eigene WG-Zimmer oder Apartments außerhalb des Universitätsgeländes verfügt, so stellt sie doch viele Informationen zu Off-Campus Apartments und weiteren Unterkünften zur Verfügung und spricht Empfehlungen aus.

Gastfamilien
Die Unterkunft in einer Gastfamilie ist ideal für diejenigen, die das Leben in einer amerikanischen Familie hautnah erleben möchten und konstant Englisch sprechen wollen. Die Gastfamilien sind in der Regel sehr interessiert daran, ihre Studenten so gut wie möglich zu unterstützen und tun viel für deren Wohlbefinden. Der Gast wird im Grunde als Teil der Familie aufgenommen, hat sein eigenes Zimmer und isst gemeinsam mit der Gastfamilie.
Wer sich überlegt, während des Gastsemesters bei einer amerikanischen Familie zu wohnen, sollte sich jedoch natürlich über gewisse Regeln des Zusammenlebens im Klaren sein.
