Die UC Berkeley wurde 1868 als erster Campus des heutigen „University of California“-Systems gegründet. Sie gehört seit Jahren zu den besten amerikanischen Universitäten, was ihr erster Platz unter allen staatlichen Universitäten in den USA im „America´s Best Colleges Guide 2008“ des US News & World Report belegt. Die UC Berkeley liegt an den Berkeley Hills, von denen aus die Bucht von San Francisco einsehbar ist und der Blick auf die Stadt Berkeley gelenkt wird. Der parkähnliche Campus ist etwa 72 Hektar groß und besticht durch seine beeindruckende Architektur, die verschiedene Baustile miteinander verbindet – von neoklassizistischen Bauten bis hin zu ganz modernen Gebäuden ist hier alles vertreten. Das Wahrzeichen des Campus ist der „Campanile“, ein über 90 Meter hoher Glockenturm, der von weit her zu sehen ist. Auf dem Campus befinden sich darüber hinaus unzählige verschiedene Museen und Sammlungen wie zum Beispiel das Berkeley Art Museum mit einem der führenden amerikanischen Filmausstellungszentren, dem Pacific Film Archive. Außerdem besitzt die UC Berkeley eine der größten Bibliotheken des Landes mit über neun Millionen Büchern und Publikationen.

Berkeley liegt mit gut 100 000 Einwohnern im Bezirk Alameda in der San Francisco Bay Area in Nordkalifornien, und bereits 13 Meilen weiter südwestlich befindet sich die Metropole San Francisco. Direkt angrenzend sind im Süden die Stadt Oakland, im Osten die Berkeley Hills und im Norden die Stadt Albany. Besonders sehenswert sind der Rosengarten, der botanische Garten und das Kunstmuseum der Universität. Mit seinem Yachthafen ist Berkeley ein beliebtes Wassersportzentrum, und außerdem ist Berkeley ein weltbekanntes Zentrum für Kunst und Entertainment. Die Bevölkerung ist sehr kreativ, hat eine hohe Bildung und lebt in einer natürlichen Umgebung. Das Klima ist angenehm, die niedrigsten und höchsten Monatsmittelwerte bewegen sich zwischen 10 °C und 17 °C.

 Summer Sessions

Beschreibung: An der UC Berkeley werden während des Sommers die so genannten Summer Sessions angeboten.
Die Summer Sessions sind reguläre Universitätskurse, die sowohl für amerikanische als auch für internationale Studenten angeboten werden, und den Lehrstoff der Kurse des Semesters in einem drei- bis zehnwöchigen kompakten Kurs zusammenfassen. So werden Kurse aus fast allen Fachbereichen angeboten, die auch während des Semesters stattfinden.
Insgesamt bietet die UC Berkeley während der Summer Sessions rund 700 Kurse an. Zu den beliebtesten Fächern mit dem vielfältigsten Kursangebot gehören unter anderem Business, Anthropology, History, Economics, Rhetoric, Ethnic Studies, Social Welfare und Legal Studies. Zusätzlich wird an der UC Berkeley eine Reihe von praktischen Sportkursen in verschiedenen Sportarten angeboten, die ergänzend hinzubelegt werden können.  Sommerkurse der Universität

Voraussetzungen: Die Summer Sessions sind im prinzipiell für alle Studenten frei zugänglich und nicht an die strengen Bewerbungskriterien gebunden, die für andere reguläre Studienprogramme der UC Berkeley sonst gelten. So können neben Studenten und Berufstätigen auch bereits Schüler der gymnasialen Oberstufe an den Summer Sessions teilnehmen.
Natürlich müssen auch hier ausreichend gute Englischkenntnisse vorhanden sein. Diese können zum einen durch einen standardisierten Englischtest wie den TOEFL oder IELTS nachgewiesen werden. Aufgrund einer Vereinbarung mit dem Büro der UC Berkeley Summer Sessions darf College-Contact.com jedoch als International Registration Center die Englischkenntnisse der deutschen Bewerber eigenständig prüfen und darf die Art des Nachweises frei wählen. College-Contact.com akzeptiert außer dem TOEFL oder IELTS auch den Nachweis über gute oder sehr gute Englischnoten während der Oberstufe oder im Studium, den Nachweis über einen längeren (Sprach-) Aufenthalt im englischsprachigen Ausland oder den Nachweis über andere absolvierte Englischkurse.

 Während der Summer Sessions A, B, C und D können die Studenten in einem der Wohnheime auf dem Campus in Einzel-, Doppel- oder Dreierzimmern wohnen. Studenten, die nur für die Session E an die UC Berkeley kommen, können leider kein Zimmer erhalten.
Auf jeder Etage gibt es ein Gemeinschaftsbad, vier Lounges mit Balkonen und einen möblierten Gemeinschaftsraum. Für die Mahlzeiten stehen die verschiedenen Restaurants auf dem Campus zur Verfügung. Aus einigen Zimmern hat man Aussicht auf die San Francisco Bay und die Berkeley Hills.
