Die University of Waikato ist die modernste Universität Neuseelands und wurde bei der ersten nationalen Auswertung von universitärer Forschungsqualität (PBRF) gleich in sieben Fächern mit dem ersten oder einem gleichwertigen Platz ausgezeichnet: Accounting and Finance; Chemistry; Communications, Journalism and Media Studies; Computer Science; Management, Human Resources, Industrial Relations, International Business and other Business; Molecular, Cellular and Whole Organism Biology; und Pure and Applied Mathematics. Als Unterstützung für internationale Studenten gibt es das International Centre, das jedes Semester ein Orientierungsprogramm anbietet, Hilfestellung bei allen Arten von Problemen leistet, die Abholung vom Flughafen organisiert und vieles mehr. Außerdem kann man verschiedenen Clubs beitreten, unter anderem dem Rugby Club, Unicol Soccer, Campus Netball und dem University Hockey Club. Davon abgesehen gibt es noch viele andere Clubs, von Kultur über Abenteuer bis hin zu traditionellem Sport – für jedes Interessensgebiet ist etwas dabei.

Der Hauptcampus der University of Waikato liegt in Hamilton, vier Kilometer vom Stadtzentrum entfernt im Vorort Hillcrest. Er ist mit 68 Hektar der größte Campus Neuseelands mit großen Sportplätzen, vielen ruhigen Wegen zum Spazierengehen und Picknickplätzen. Außerdem gibt es das Uni Recreation Centre als Möglichkeit, Sport- und Freizeitaktivitäten zu betreiben. Ein weiteres signifikantes Gebäude ist die WEL Energy Trust Academy of Performing Arts, ein moderner Komplex für darstellende Künste. Dann gibt es unter anderem noch ein Gesundheitszentrum, eine Apotheke und ein Reisebüro. Der zweitgrößte Campus liegt in Tauranga in der Bay of Plenty Region. Er teilt sich auf in das Hauptlehrgebiet im Bongard Centre an der Cameron Road und den Empfangsbereich an der Durham Street. Für Sprachschüler gibt es in Auckland den dritten Campus mit dem Language Institute.

Hamilton befindet sich auf der Nordinsel Neuseelands und ist der Verwaltungssitz der Region Waikato. Die etwa 130 000 Einwohner bilden ein multikulturelles Gemisch, wobei der Großteil europäischstämmig ist. Bis nach Auckland, einem Stadtgebiet auf der Nordinsel mit über 1,3 Millionen Einwohnern, sind es nur 129 Kilometer. In der Nähe befinden sich gute Surfstrände, große Waldgebiete, Höhlen und Seen wie der Lake Karapiro oder Thermalquellen, beispielsweise in Rotorua. Das bedeutet, dass die Freizeitmöglichkeiten beinahe unbegrenzt sind; selbst Skifahren kann man in den Bergen der Nordinsel. Zusätzlich sind Sportarten wie Motorsport, Cricket oder Rugby sehr beliebt; letztere wird im großen stadteigenen Waikato Stadium ausgetragen. Das Wetter lädt geradezu zu Outdoor-Aktivitäten ein, denn das Klima ist gemäßigt, wenn auch manchmal etwas feucht; die Sommer sind warm und die Winter mild, normalerweise schneit es nicht. Auch kulturell hat Hamilton mit vielen kleineren Kunstgalerien und Museen viel zu bieten, darunter das „Waikato Museum of Art and Culture“. Verschiedene Cafés, Pubs und Restaurants tragen zu einem aufregenden Nachtleben bei, und in der Stadt finden regelmäßig Veranstaltungen statt wie beispielsweise das „Balloons over Waikato“-Festival, das jedes Jahr etwa 100 000 Besucher anlockt, oder die „National Agricultural Fieldays“, die größte landwirtschaftliche Messe der südlichen Hemisphäre. Am bekanntesten unter Touristen dürften aber die „Hamilton Gardens“ sein, eine weitläufige Grünanlage, in der verschiedene landestypische Gärten präsentiert werden.

 Semester

Beschreibung: Internationalen Studenten wird im Rahmen des Semesterprogamms "Study Abroad" die Möglichkeit geboten, für ein oder zwei Semester an der University of Waikato zu studieren. Hierbei besteht die Möglichkeit der freien, semester- und fachbereichsübergreifenden Kursauswahl aus allen Universitätskursen der an der University of Waikato angebotenen Bachelor- und Masterstudiengänge.
Die gewünschten Kurse werden bereits bei der Bewerbung angegeben. Die Kurswahl muss vom jeweiligen Fachbereich der University of Waikato genehmigt werden. In der Regel erhält man zusammen mit der Zusage für das Study Abroad Programm auch eine Bestätigung über die genehmigten Kurse.  Semesterprogramm der Universität

NZ$ 9,240 pro Semester
Study Abroad Studenten, die "Postgraduate Courses" belegen, zahlen gemäß eines Abkommens zwischen der deutschen und neuseeländischen Regierung nur die weitaus niedrigeren Gebühren für einheimische Studenten.
In den Studiengebühren sind 70 Credit Points pro Semester enthalten. In der Regel belegt man hiermit drei bis vier Kurse pro Semester.  Gebühreninformation
Voraussetzungen: Bewerber für das Semesterprogramm der University of Waikato müssen an einer Universität oder (Fach-)Hochschule eingeschrieben sein und mindestens zwei Semester absolviert haben.
Zudem müssen ausreichende gute Englischkenntnisse vorhanden sein, die durch das Erreichen einer Mindestpunktzahl bei einem standardisierten Englischtest wie dem TOEFL oder dem IELTS nachgewiesen werden müssen. Studentenwohnheim
 An der University of Waikato gibt es drei verschiedene, direkt auf dem Campus gelegene Studentenwohnheime.
In den Studentenwohnheimen "College Hall", "Student Village" und "Bryant Hall" gibt es Einzelzimmer, welche voll möbliert sind. Telefon- und Internetanschluss sind zum Teil direkt auf den Zimmern vorhanden. Es stehen zudem Computerräume für alle Bewohner zur Verfügung. Die Bäder und weitere Einrichtungen werden gemeinschaftlich genutzt. In den Studentenwohnheimen ist bei der Wahl eines Einzelzimmers die Verpflegung mit drei Mahlzeiten täglich bereits in der Miete enthalten.

Apartments auf dem Campus
 Auf dem Campus der University of Waikato gibt es zum einen im "Orchard Park", einem reinem Apartmenkomplex, zum anderen in den Studentenwohnheimen "College Hall", "Student Village" und "Bryant Hall", die Möglichkeit ein Zimmer in einem Apartment zu bekommen.
Die Apartments sind im Prinzip wie Wohnungen angelegt, haben vier bis sieben Einzelschlafzimmer und sind voll möbliert. Küche, Bad und Wohnzimmer werden innerhalb dieser Apartmentwohnung gemeinschaftlich genutzt. Telefon- und Internet stehen optional zur Verfügung. Für die Verpflegung ist man in den Apartments selbst zuständig.

Private Apartments / Hotels
 Wer möchte, der kann natürlich auch ein privates Apartment oder eine Wohngemeinschaft für die Zeit an der University of Waikato suchen. Dies geschieht jedoch in Eigenregie.
Natürlich kann es sein, dass diese Art der Unterbringung etwas teurer ist als eine Unterkunft in einem Studentenwohnheim. Auch sollte man sich über bestimmte versteckte Kosten, wie Kautionen, zusätzliche Stromkosten oder ähnliches informieren und sich mit den Mietvereinbarungen gut vertraut machen. Ebenfalls bedacht werden sollte die eventuell notwendige Anschaffung von Möbeln.

 Die Unterkunft in einer Gastfamilie, das so genannte Homestay, ist ideal für diejenigen, die das Leben in einer neuseeländischen Familie hautnah erleben möchten und konstant Englisch sprechen wollen. Die Gastfamilien sind in der Regel sehr interessiert daran, ihre Studenten so gut wie möglich zu unterstützen und tun viel für deren Wohlbefinden. Der Gast wird im Grunde als Teil der Familie aufgenommen, hat sein eigenes Zimmer und isst gemeinsam mit der Gastfamilie.
Wer sich überlegt, während des Gastsemesters bei einer neuseeländischen Familie zu wohnen, sollte sich jedoch natürlich über gewisse Regeln des Zusammenlebens im Klaren sein.
Die University of Waikato versucht nach den Angaben der Bewerbung für das Homestay, eine möglichst passende Familienunterkunft zu finden.
