New £16m Business School opens to the Students

The new Business School building at the University of Huddersfield opens for students this September. Over £16 million has been invested in the building and contributes to over £90m invested in new buildings on the campus over the past decade.

This exciting investment brings all of the Business School’s activities together in one state-of-the art facility and provides students with an excellent environment in which to learn and develop.

The four-storey structure has a curving wing with an enclosed courtyard and more than doubles the size of the previous Business School building.

The new building will cater for a growing demand for business courses at Huddersfield. Classrooms will be situated mainly on the ground, with a special facility for Law students – including a mock court room – on the top floor, where they will have spectacular views of the Canal and the rest of the campus from the roof level terrace. Students can benefit from fully equipped teaching space with excellent IT facilities as well as a ‘Learning Development’ centre which provides space for our specialist tutors to provide students with additional assistance with academic skills.

Another key feature will be a social space called ‘The Street’ at first floor level. This will comprise a wide curving, glazed corridor, with soft seating, tables, WiFi internet access, vending facilities and coffee shop, where students (and staff) can gather for study or relaxation. From its inner curve the Street will open out onto an outdoor terrace overlooking the central courtyard.

The new building is located at one of the most attractive parts of the campus, being situated next to the Huddersfield Narrow Canal and is joined to the main campus by a bridge over the canal allowing easy access to the University library and Café on 3rd.

The new Business School will surpass even the Creative Arts Building (opened in 2008) to become the most environmentally friendly building on campus. Central to the project are energy and carbon saving considerations. The whole building has been designed to be energy efficient, incorporating state of the art energy saving technology.

A special opening ceremony will take place in November complete with a spectacular fireworks display. 2010 also marks the 25th anniversary of the MBA at Huddersfield with a celebration event taking place in late October.
