Top designs on show in new exhibition
A new exhibition showcasing the best works from University of Canberra graduating design students has opened at the Gallery of Australian Design (GAD).
The inaugural ‘Best of the Best’ exhibition was officially unveiled by Vice-Chancellor Professor Stephen Parker last night.
The exhibition features the top student projects for 2009, across the five disciplines of architecture, graphic design, industrial design, interior design and landscape architecture.
Curator Anita Fitton said it was exciting to take the exhibition out to a wider audience for the very first time, with previous exhibitions held on campus.
“These design graduates will literally shape how the future looks, so this is a great opportunity to explore and be inspired by their creativity,” Ms Fitton said.
The exhibition includes a number of innovative designs, including the ‘Predator’ Balance Board, created by industrial design student Greg Scott.
The Predator is a training device for snowboarders, wake boarders and surfers.
A snowboarder, wake boarder and surfer himself, Mr Scott said he wanted to design a device that would help boarders of all abilities improve their skills, whilst having fun and improving core muscles.
Mr Scott said his friends found the board addictive and said he hoped to have a board in every living room in Jindabyne over the snow season.
“The board would also be good in ski and board shops, so that people can get a feel for snowboarding before they hit the slopes,” Mr Scott said.
Other industrial design projects include an inflatable wetsuit, a camera pod and environmentally friendly lawnmower.
Landscape architecture students were asked to identify landscape issues of critical concern and develop individual design responses to address those concerns.
Rhys Aleksandric described his project, which was based with the eastern broadacre, as “bold and visionary, while integrating living and working amongst nature.”
Other students developed conceptual designs for artists’ residences and gallery spaces in Sydney and for a hypothetical National Museum of Nature on Acton Peninsula and Springbank Island in Canberra.
The exhibition also features work from University of Canberra alumni.
The exhibition runs from 2 December to 26 January.
The Gallery’s opening hours are 10am-4pm Wednesday through Saturday.
