News vom 17.06.2010
UC customs courses recognised
Courses from the University of Canberra Centre for Customs and Excise Studies are among the first in the world to be accredited by the World Customs Organization (WCO).
The six courses were recognised by the WCO as meeting the requirements of its international standards for the customs profession. The centre’s dean of studies Steve Holloway said it was a great achievement.
“This is the first time any University in the world has been given that recognition by the World Customs Organisation,” Mr Holloway said. “Of the nine academic programs that were recognised, six have been developed by the Centre for Customs and Excise Studies.”
Australian Exporter of the Year for Education and Training in 2008, Mr Holloway said the centre has been working closely with the WCO for some time to help raise the academic standing of the customs profession.
“The centre has been in the forefront of customs education since it started, it’s just gone from strength to strength. We’ve always been regarded as world’s best practice in customs education and the WCO accreditation is an acknowledgement of that fact,” Mr Holloway said.
The centre’s courses are all available online and are undertaken by students from around the globe.
“We’ve got students from Europe, China, the US, Africa and Asia,” Mr Holloway said.
“One of the key attractions for students enrolling in these courses is the opportunity for interaction between students who can share their own country’s experiences with each other. It’s a real enhancement of their learning experience because they’re exposed to international trade and border management issues from around the world.”
The courses accredited by the WCO were the Graduate Certificate in International Customs Law and Administration, Graduate Diploma in International Customs Law and Administration, Master of International Customs Law and Administration, Master of Customs Administration, Graduate Diploma in Excise Studies and the Graduate Certificate in Excise Studies.
“As a result we’re already receiving an increased demand for the courses,” Mr Holloway said.
The other two universities recognised were the University of Riga in Latvia and University of Muenster in Germany.
