HPU Achieves Prestigious Global Ranking for Tourism Research

Hawai‘i Pacific University’s Travel Industry Management Program (TIM) has been ranked 59th in the world when analyzing the number of publications of the leading tourism research journals over the past five years (January 2004-2009), according to a study conducted by the College of Charleston-South Carolina.

Through his leadership in research, Dr. Jerome Agrusa, professor of Travel Industry Management who is well regarded for his expertise in hospitality and tourism research, has helped HPU’s TIM program gain international recognition.

“This is an extraordinary accomplishment for HPU to be ranked higher than other major research universities that have Ph.D. programs and graduate students that help faculty with their research as well as faculty members who have much lower teaching requirements,” Agrusa said.

The study stated, “Though the analysis was not limited to hospitality and tourism management faculty, it clearly shows who the universities are and whose faculty are producing the bulk of our field’s research.” A total of 993 authors from 217 universities were included in this study.

Agrusa was recently awarded the prestigious Fulbright Senior Specialist Grant. He has published more than 100 research articles and conference papers, and has presented his research in more than 25 different countries. His work has been cited in numerous newspapers and magazines including The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times and Forbes Magazine.
