HPU Delegation brings home “Honorable Delegation” and “Outstanding Head Delegate” Awards
The Hawai‘i Pacific University United Nations Club won the “Honorable Delegation” and “Outstanding Head Delegate” awards at the 2009 National Model United Nations Conference at the United Nation Headquarters, New York City, in April. Daniyal Saud, Head Delegate, and double majoring in International Studies and Biochemistry, was selected as “Outstanding Head Delegate.”
Two HPU students were also selected for staff positions, which usually are awarded to returning competition candidates. First-time attendees J. Tyler Cade and Iyar Martin were selected to the staff positions of Committee Chair and Rapporteur.
The HPU student delegation represented the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan on seven of the UN committees. The delegation debated proposals and resolutions from the perspective of diplomats from their assigned countries regarding issues such as technology promotion in education and nuclear nonproliferation.
HPU students were also received for a diplomatic discussion at Afghanistan’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations by Ambassador and Permanent Representative H. E. Dr. Zahir Tanin and his staff.
HPU student attendees included Patrick Branco, Political Science and International Relations major; J. Tyler Cade, Diplomacy and Military Studies major; Iyar Martin, Finance major; Morgan McLellan, International Relations major; Sai Oo, International Relations major; Malia Schroeder, International Relations major; Renee Stewart, International Studies major; and Stefanie Wesch, International Relations major. Dr. Grace Cheng, faculty advisor for the NMUN Conference and the UN Club, accompanied the delegation to New York.
“We were so fortunate to have a group of dedicated and motivated students to represent HPU at this important conference,” said Dr. Carlos Juarez, dean of the HPU College of International Studies. “Their hard work paid off with the two prestigious awards, and it’s an experience they simply can’t get in the classroom – a chance to experience diplomacy in action.”
