Griffith named top international educator

Griffith University's reputation as a global leader in education has been strengthened by winning the Education and Training category at the 2009 Premier of Queensland’s Export Awards.

Pro Vice Chancellor (International) Chris Madden said the award, which recognised outstanding innovation and export achievement in the field of education and training services, expertise and curriculum, was an acknowledgement of the excellent opportunities Griffith offered international students.

"Griffith seeks to internationalise all students' educational experiences, inclusive of the curriculum and methods of teaching and, firmly supports the social and cultural benefits of the presence of international education and students," Mr Madden said.

"More than 9780 international students made up 26.4 per cent of the students on five Griffith campuses in 2008, representing 123 countries of origin.

"Griffith's international activities bring in excess of $127 million into Australia in direct export income and, an additional estimated $155 million in flow-on income."

Mr Madden said the University's ongoing commitment to developing research centres of international significance and building strategic international partnerships would continue to contribute to its export success in the future.

Major export markets in 2008-09 included China, India, Korea, Canada, Hong Kong, Saudi Arabia, Taiwan, the USA, Japan, Zimbabwe, Vietnam, Norway and Germany.

"Griffith University is well into the third phase on international education, where there is much emphasis on Australian students undertaking an overseas study experience, where the curriculum is internationalised, and where much work is being done to integrate international students into the University and wider community while they are studying," Mr Madden said.

Vice Chancellor Professor Ian O'Connor said there was a significant and sustained commitment to providing a first-class education for Griffith students, and this translated into academic success and careers after graduation.

"Niche offerings such as the work-integrated learning strategies Griffith University provides for its students are a sought-after and valuable introduction to the world of work and learning," Professor O'Connor said.

"It is the quality of teaching and learning and student support, as well as the working relationships with overseas institutions, agents, governments and pathway partners that are vital in achieving success in an intensely competitive international education environment."
