CDU sound studio takes students into the future

The first industry-standard surround sound studio in the Territory is now up and running at Charles Darwin University.

CDU multimedia lecturer Peter Houtmeyers said the $65,000 studio would provide Bachelor of Creative Arts and Industries and Bachelor of Music students with the skills to get ahead in the industry.

“There is no other studio in the Territory like it,” he said. “The course provides students with experience using the latest industry surround sound equipment, giving them the hands-on skills they need to get ahead when they gain work within the industry.”

Mr Houtmeyers said that the music staff planned to integrate teaching with working on productions for local industries, such as documentaries and music film clips.

“Students do some of their own music recording but the studio is primarily a post-production studio dealing with video-related content such as TV commercials, short film and documentary, and radio,” he said.

“It opens up a range of professions for graduates including audio editing, record engineering or post-production sound design.

“It’s a real ‘win-win’ with CDU investing in the future of the Territory by giving the students in the Territory expertise that will benefit the local industry.

“The educational benefits with this new surround studio facility, providing students with the opportunity to gain valuable real industry experience, is huge,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Alice Springs campus will soon open its new music studio, which has been outfitted with the latest generation recording equipment. It adds to the strong music program running out of Central Australia.
