News vom 15.04.2010
Construction Management Students Take First in Building Information Modeling at National Competition
Students in California State University, Chico’s Department of Construction Management took first place in building information modeling in the Associated Schools of Construction 2010 National Competition.
Building information modeling (BIM) is the latest technological approach to construction planning and management by use of computer simulation for both the project and information necessary to run the construction processes.
In the national competition, CSU, Chico’s team of six students beat out nine other teams. The University of Florida came in second place and Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo came in third.
The competition was held in Sparks, Nev., Feb. 16-19. More than 1,000 students from 42 colleges and universities took part.
Professor Willem Kymmell, team advisor, said CSU, Chico was one of the first universities in the United States to develop a BIM curriculum. He said support from San Mateo-based Webcor Builders has been critical to building the program. This year, CSU, Chico received the third of five annual $20,000 gifts from Webcor, considered the largest general contractor in California as well as the largest green contractor in the state.
“Webcor’s generous support has been essential, particularly during the current budgetary challenges facing the state and state universities,” he said.
Kymmell said BIM is a key area for the construction industry since the more progressive companies are now heavily utilizing 3D computer models to construct their projects.
CSU, Chico students on the BIM team were Ryan Bruggeman, Sean Kaford, Tim Kehoe, Imke Lewis, Dustin Rothwell (captain) and David Sproule.
CSU, Chico construction management students also came in third in two other competitions: the heavy civil construction division and the marine construction division.
